Real Points Network

The RPN is technology system designed to reduce the corruption coming from Keetharsi's lake. It is created with specialized crystals and runes adapted to Iphars' magic and it creates a shell covering the lake that reduces the chaos as magic crosses it.

The shell

The machine works based on the magical properties of newly discovered crystals that the city of Shal'aa found underground while excavating to reach the lake's water while avoiding the portal on the surface. These crystals have a property that dissipates —and even nullify, depending on the power— magic that go through them.

By carefully placing the crystals in the most mana-dense sections of the lake and adding complex runes —which people from all cities in Keetharsi worked together for a few days to create them, by using previous knowledge from Ashtara and re-applying them to Iphars' chaotic rules of magic—, a semi-invisible magical grid, or barrier, that surrounds all the lake on the surface and lowers, or cancels, the consequences of any magic crossing the barrier, whether from inside to outside or reverse.

This barrier can sometimes be seen by very keen people or when there's a lot of suddent magic trying to cross it, looking like wavy bright blue lines dancing in the air. For less keen people, or moments where there isn't as much magic crossing, it is much harder to see, one would have to be specifically searching for it and at most would just feel like there's something odd in the air.

The side effects

As with everything in Iphars, magic brings side effects, also called "chaos". Keeping the side effects of the RPN to the minimum is harsh work, once that has people constantly checking on the runes and crystals and what effect they are having when being used. It is common for runes to need to be re-written and modified, it is also common for not all the runes needing it at the same time or not all of them ending up using the same solution. Maintaining the barrier is a never-ending job.

It is considered a necessity though. People have seen some possible side effects of the barrier malfunctioning, especially at its creation.

I'm curious, is it hazardous for people to be placing and maintaining these devices around the lake in such magic-dense environments? I would love to know what some of the side effects do tend to be, would help really emphasise how dangerous or safe it is to be working on keeping these crystals up and running.   Overall I do like it, I'm curious to learn more about this lake in the future!

I would say it depends if the person taking care of the points lives near the lake or not. Since the RPN is mostly taken care by Shal'aa and they live next to the lake, they probably are in no higher risk than from their homes. If someone from the other side of the island came to it, it might feel some side effects even if not seen immediately.

I would love to describe some effects, but the way I see it is that almost anything can happen, from bad to good, so the danger-level of the place is based on luck. Maybe I could figure out some side effect to explain, not necessary the danger-level, but the difference of the effects between the lake with and without RPN.
