Keetharsi
The island
In Ashtara, this island was part of a continent, nesting at the foothills of a strong magical mountain range. It was a beautiful and peaceful area that was visited by plenty mages who looked to improve their craft in different ways. A few villages could be found around, each able to help the mages improve in different ways or different schools.
Now, in Iphars, only a portion of the region is left to float in the air. From the area, barely a third of the forest and the plains are left as well as the lake that once was feed by two rivers. Four of the cities are still standing and a fourth one is half in ruins. The surface of the lake has turned into a portal albeit the water under it is still accessible and, thanks to magic, is not turning stagnant or falling off the floating island.
Thanks to its past, the cities don't mind experimenting with magic and using it —even with its chaos— to adapt to their new situation. A lot of visitors at the time the area crossed to Iphars were mages, as it was the main tourists in town, so they aren't lacking in magical expertise, experience, and knowledge. They did have to contact with the other towns and plan ways to make their island self-sufficient, as none of them was fully independent and needed the rest of the world for some imports.
The corruption
The portal on the lake is creating a lot of concentrated magic in the island, the area is now even more magic dense than it was in Ashtara, and all this magic, going nowhere, is corrupting the island and changing it. The change is not slow neither fast, but it is constant. It can be quite a brutal change or something so insignificant that you must be looking for it, but the magic keeps tugging the changes and for a week there might be good or insignificant changes and the next one people must learn how to adapt to a bad change.
The corruption is slowly changing the whole island, but to what end goal is a mystery. Much of the flora and fauna has been changed at least once or twice into something different or fully new, many of the people have also been affected and many buildings and structures have had to be reconstructed or given supports.
