Idiarish

"Idiarish" can either refer specifically to the Idiari tribe or as a general term for the national identity of the many tribes which inhabit the state of Idiari or its colonies. The terms "tribal Idiarish" and "cultural Idiarish," respectively, are used when confusion would be likely.     Cultural Idiarish are all descended from a common lineage which diverged over a thousand years ago. However, they all share many similar traits. For instance, while their languages all have their own quirks, they are all mutually intelligible, and a native speaker of one learning to speak another mostly (though not entirely) comes down to swapping out some suffixes or moving some words around. They all have brownish skin, typically brown-to-black hair, and particularly vividly colored irises.     Tribal Idiarish are those who settled in the mountainous regions. The mountains of Idiari share a peculiar shape: to the south and east, strong winds and rain have worn the mountains down to concave slopes, while to the drier north and west, they remain steep and jagged. From a certain distant angle, the peaks look like a carnivore's teeth.     Certain plants grow very well in the unusual climate of the mountains, which provided much of Idiari's sustenance for centuries. However, with the advent of industrialization, its most valuable resource became its easy access to ore and bicchi crystals.     Tribal Idiarish usually have lighter brown skin and eyes which are some shade of green or olive.     Over the centuries there have been many bids to move the capital from the mountains to someplace more centralized, more densely populated, or at least easier to access for the other tribes. However, the capital's highly defensible location and, more importantly, cultural significance have foiled these attempts.     The symbol of the Idiari is the wyvern. Wyverns are mighty creatures associated with nobility and courage and who live in high mountain caves. For the discontents of other tribes, it's also noted that wyverns feed off the livestock and work of others.

Naming Traditions

Family names

All Idiari tribes follow a standard pattern of naming: for women, their name is given in the order First Name, Paternal Family Name, Maternal Family Name; for men, First Name, Maternal Family Name, Paternal Family Name. The second name is considered their "true" family name, as it is what is generally used to identify them and what they pass on to their children. Those who identify as neither men nor women are still generally bound to this in some form, though many may swap the order of their family names as a symbolic gesture.
Nearly all languages of Idiari use the -sh suffix to indicate an ethnicity, or at least a very similar sound. Interestingly, this is a quirk shared with Sanue, despite their own languages diverging millennia ago. If a name ends with a silent letter or a consonant group, the last consonant may be dropped before the -sh is added.     Thus, the ethnic terms for the different tribes are as follows:     Idiari: Idiarish     Muhaf: Muhafsh     Colán: Colánsh     Fourant: Fouransh     Gañaja: Gañajash     Dossa: Dossash     Oreux: Oreush     Borald: Boralsh
Parent ethnicities
As of the 656 census, 4,796,536 people identified as ethnically Idiarish or Idiari-Loush.
