Fouransh
Idiari covers a large span of both land and time, and thus it encompasses a variety of regional sub-ethnicities. While all are Idiarish, they are not a monolith; Idiari was formed out of several groups, each with slightly different appearances and cultural identities.
Idiari, naturally, possesses a great many rivers, but nearly all are tributaries of two: one to the west of Idiari's mountain capital, one to the southeast. And while, naturally, all of these rivers have their own names, the rivers as a whole are often collectively referred to as "Fourant," after the people who settled along them in Idiari's earliest days. And while the Fouransh are themselves divided into western and southeastern, I'm not going to make a page for every single little ethnicity. They generally think of themselves as a single people anyway.
The western river is much shorter and rougher, running down the mountains' steep western faces into Tafugh Bay. Few animals are able to live in it. However, the river's annual flood cycle allows it to easily be used to irrigate, and the territory of western Fourant is productive farmland, primarily producing vine fruits. Numerous aqueducts have been built running off of the river to far-reaching parts of Idiari.
Meanwhile, the rivers coming off of the gentler southeastern slopes have cut a long, wide, slow-flowing river which eventually ends in a fair-sized delta. The river is an ideal habitat for vast quantities of fish, which comprise the staple of the southeast Fourant diet. As with the western river, the southeastern river also serves an agricultural purpose, primarily for orchards. However, to prevent overfishing, strict regional laws limit the density of people who may live along the river. In the River Delta area particularly, this has lead to the region being populated mainly by Idiari's wealthiest citizens and those who cater to them.
The Fouransh tend to have skin on the darker side of the Idiari spectum. Eye colors range from light blue to dark blue (southeastern) and from dark blue to purple (western).
The icon of the Fourant is the goldfish. The Fourant highly prize knowledge, especially magical knowledge, and the goldfish is a particularly intelligent fish. In addition, they have been popular pets on both rivers of the Fourant since they were imported centuries ago; in wealthier areas, they are even specially bred for unique traits. "Goldfish" is sometimes used as a slang term for wealthy Fourant, and not always in a complimentary fashion: those bred by the wealthy tend to be inbred and fragile, so the saying goes.
As of the 656 census, 1,973,050 people identified as Fouransh or Fourant-Loush.
