Creating Your Fairy

That's what you're really here for, hm? Well, let's go over the basics!

Firstly, you're going to want to check out the articles about all the fairy types! The fairies here are elemental beings, all capable of their own powers, and each with their own visual quirks!

Each fairy also has their own special talent! For more about talents, what they are and which ones your fairy can have, see Talents!

All fairies come with these typical sets of features. However, some of these can be replaced depending on the fairy type you choose:

  • Wings protruding from their back
  • Pointed ears
  • Small size (like what you'd expect from a stereotypical fairy!)
  • Average size is about 4 inches. For more about fairy size and scale, see this article! However, feel free to still write heights like normal. We can just assume it's in fairy measurements.
  • Century long lifespans (like that of a human)

And before you go fluttering off to create your fairy, don't forget to check out the Fairy Creation Rules !

Now, the next question you must ask yourself is... where will my fairy hail from? Well, that's where we can whip out this handy dandy map here!

Faetalia Base Map Image

Your fairy can come from, and travel through, any of these 19 spots! And, you can read all about them over here in the locations category !

Okay, okay, that's the most pertinent of information, but I urge you to please stay! I know, I know, it's a lot, but it's all very relevant I assure you! Better to know everything now instead of needing it all corrected later, that's what I always say!

Important Lore and Miscellaneous Info

The Island's Creation

In the beginning, there was only a vast emptiness where there was neither light nor darkness, neither sea nor land. But suddenly, without any warning, something appeared. It was a beautiful being comprising all the elements of the world. They were made up of all the water from streams, oceans, and ponds, all the fire of the sun and lava, and all the earth from mountains, plains, and deserts. They were everything and yet, they were alone. They had no one to share the beauty and wonder of their world with.

Filled with a deep longing for companionship, they decided to take pieces of themselves to create their family. The first being made a being of earth, another of the air, and yet another of the water. They also created beings of the dark, the fire, and the ice. But even then, their family was dying, for there was nowhere for them to survive.

The first being was heartbroken but knew what they had to do. With their remaining power, they created Faetalia, a world with earth for their family to live upon, water for them to drink, sky for them to breathe, fire to keep them warm, ice to keep them cool, and darkness because not all could be light.

With this act of love and sacrifice their physical body no longer remained, but they were not sad, for they knew that they would be able to watch over their family and everything around them forevermore.

This being would soon become known as The Founder , and their family as the Original Fairies.

In the present, many fairies see this as purely a tale of legend, while others regard it entirely as real, and some have even taken to worshipping The Founder and Original Fairies alike, giving them a more "God-Like" status.
Whether or not this truly happened has been lost to time, so it's truly anyone's guess. Are the royals truly descendants of the Original Fairies, or is this all just myth? Perhaps some fairies just discovered Faetalia and settled down here, or maybe it is true that a mystical being was the one who created it...

The Royals

The Royals in Faetalia have been a constant for almost as long as the island has existed. As fairykind evolved, royals emerged- those born directly from the Original Fairies. Being from such a powerful lineage, they were revered by all, their mere presence commanding deep respect from all around them.

The royals held power and authority over all the fairies and their land. They were responsible for overseeing and controlling every aspect of the fairies' lives, from their daily routines to the major decisions that affected their entire community. They had a great influence on the fairies, and their leadership was unquestioned.

Their rule, however, was not always harmonious. They would often resort to extreme measures to ensure the prosperity and stability of their kingdoms, even if it meant going against the will of the fairies. This would often result in the elements of nature clashing with each other, causing chaos and destruction throughout the land.

In such times of turmoil, alliances had to be formed between the elemental leaders to combat the resulting conflicts and bring back peace. The struggle continued for many years until, at last, the leaders were able to overcome their differences and forge strong bonds of trust and cooperation. Thus ending the years of conflict that had ravaged the realm and ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity.

As a peaceful atmosphere settled over the land, the relevance of the royals diminished in the face of growing communal power. Over time, the Original Fairies gradually lost their prominence in the minds of the public, resulting in a significant decline in the authority wielded by the royals.

Despite still holding their royal status, the modern-day royals have become more of a symbolic figurehead than actual rulers. They occupy the highest position in the hierarchy solely to carry the title and maintain the luxurious lifestyle that comes with it. They continue to actively support and advocate for the fairies they preside over, each in their own little ways, ensuring that everyone is well taken care of and living happily.

F.A.Q.

༺ ˎˊ- Does racism/homophobia/transphobia etc. exist in Faetalia and can I use it as a part of my character's backstory/story?

No, any form of bigotry does not and should not exist within Faetalia. While characters can hold prejudice they should not be bigoted. These biases should never have arised in Faetalia. Being queer is normal, being trans is normal, and there's never been any race-based discrimination in Faetalia. Please keep it away!!! Everyone is made equal and treated equally. This is fun fairy land! We can use this to escape from those evil things!

༺ ˎˊ- What is the law like in Faetalia? Are there cops? Prisons?

There are no cops and no prisons in Faetalia, and especially not the shitty systems that are used in the real world. There are certainly rules and specific social practices in place that should be followed, probably varying depending on the royal. And there are knights who ensure that things are kept in order, peace is maintained, and everyone is kept safe. But the knights are not cops and should not be compared to such. (Read more about Knights here) Obviously, there will be consequences should a fairy commit a crime or cause distress to the public or other fairies, but the consequences will not be prison-time, going to court, or being detained by “cops” or in this case the knights. Knights will likely step in to take care of it, but violent responses are always the last resort, and consequences will vary on what crime has taken place.

For more information, see The Law .

༺ ˎˊ- What is the extent of technology in Faetalia?

There is no modern technology in Faetalia. It is a fantasy world full of magic. They do not have computers, cars, cell phones, etc. Anything more advanced, like fast communication or travel, would be powered by strong magic, not electronic technology. We are very lenient, however, on coming up with cool, fantastical ways to mimic real world tech. So long as it feels imaginative, magical, and fairy-like!

For more information, see Technology

༺ ˎˊ- How does money work in Faetalia? Is there capital? Does wealth = status?

Generally, in Faetalia, we'd like to lean as far away from capitalistic systems as possible and as far into more communal systems. For a long time, the server has used "gold" as its monetary system. However, this often led to the idea that wealth equates to status, creating a divide between "richer" and "poorer" fairies. We want to avoid this disparity so that all fairies can stand on more equal footing. But, how does a fairy go about accessing material goods? Well, by trading and bartering!

༺ ˎˊ- Can I make nobility? What if I want my fairy to appear more high status?

Fairies could still grow up more "well-off" than others, and have more material goods. However, status would be defined more by popularity than by wealth. It could be built through recognition, such as having your name known, starting a successful business, or gaining a good reputation among fellow fairies. A fairy with more recognition amongst Faetalia may be granted certain favors thanks to this. If a celebrity walked into a shop, and the shopkeeper was a huge fan, they may offer goods and services for little in return than an autograph. But, generally, this would be a status not based on wealth but rather on how well-known one is!

Aaaand now that's pretty much it! Of course, you're welcome to keep poking around the website because there's plenty more to discover! But hopefully this covered all the bases needed to start your journey in Faetalia!
