The Veilwicks are a specialized instrument in the rituals used by both the Lucian Faith, the Drausk apocolyptic dragon cults, as well as the Deshir Faith which exists in the Desh subcontinent.
Properties
Physical & Chemical Properties
Veilwicks first appeared in record before the fall of the Kadian Empire, as a method to lure Dium to places to capture them.
Veilwicks look just like normal incense, however are far more than that. For a true, proper effect, a veilwick is placed on a holder, surrounded by salt and shaved metals, gold flakes, or silver beads. This is to ensure any Dium that is summoned is captured before it can act. Once it is lit, the veilwick burns white for a few seconds before a rainbow bellow of smoke emerges. The air within the area or room starts to thin, and hallucigenic effects, such as the walls "wobbling", doors "making sounds without opening" can occur. What is happening is that the Veilwick is "burning" through the veil, forming a microcosmic hole in the Still Realm and the Changing Realm, from which spirits are drawn to.
Origin & Source
Veilwick is made first utilizing a wooden skewer. These skewers are procured from what are called "Waking Trees", trees that were affected by the Dium or are located on ley lines or other Dium-related hotspots. In Deshir, a lot of these spots are hunted by tree-hunters who seek to profit. In Adraus, many of these waking trees are guarded and upkept by the Lucian Priesthood as an emblem of balance between worlds.
The skewers appear normal, but when touched, give a sense of warmth and belonging. They are then covered in a secret concocted formula of aromatic powders and fragrances utilizing a paste-like substance. Most of these Veilwicks are made in churches, however in Drausk and Desh, because of the large land area and the ability for some to find these spaces before proper authorities can handle them, Veilwicks are far more accessible in shops and cornermarkets - in Azora, there are actual Veilwick black markets within and without the church knowing.
