Magisters Arcanii
Custodians of the Rift, Wardens of Lawful Power
"Power unbound is fire in dry fields. We are the hand that contains, not the flame that devours."
The Magisters Arcanii are not merely spellcasters — they are the arcane spine of the Exiled Imperium. Formed in the wake of the first manifestations of Rift-touched magic among human bloodlines, the Magisters were shaped by necessity: to study, codify, and ultimately govern the unpredictable forces of their new world.
They are scholar-sorcerers, judges, enforcers, and bureaucrats. Clad in robes stitched with runes of jurisdiction and wielding staves capped not in crystal but in lawbound sigils, the Magisters walk the line between miracle and mandate. They are the mortal expression of Tablet IV of the Codex Exilia — Magic shall serve Order.
Source of Authority
Their power derives from the Codex Exilia, specifically Tablet IV: Magica. Through this clause, all spellwork must be licensed, monitored, and, when necessary, extinguished.
The Senate may deliberate, and the Imperator may decree, but only the Arcanii may sanction.
Appointment
No one may claim the title of Magister Arcanii without enduring the Rite of Binding — a public ritual in which the candidate binds their magic to an oath-sigil forged in Riftlight. This mark, burned upon the soul, ensures loyalty and accountability.
The rite is irreversible.
Judicial and Legislative Relationship
Though subordinate in theory to the Senate and the Imperator, in practice the Magisters Arcanii interpret Tablet IV with autonomous authority. The Praetorium Aeternum defers to them in all magical trials, and no law concerning arcane matters is passed without their seal.
They are the silent quorum in every great debate, and their approval carries the weight of law.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain the Registry of Licensed Casters.
- Investigate and suppress unlicensed magic.
- Oversee magical education and experimentation.
- Serve as arcane advisors to the Senate and Imperator.
- Interpret Tablet IV and propose magical amendments.
They are equal parts scholar, inquisitor, and civil servant.
Cultural Significance
To the common citizen, a Magister Arcanii is a living embodiment of both hope and dread. They bring light to the sick through regulated healing — and silence to forbidden tongues with but a glance.
Though feared, they are respected. They are the fire behind the law.
Status
The Arcanii are both revered and resented. They remain indispensable — and untouchable. So long as the Rift endures, so too does their mandate.
Yet dissent brews in whispers: rogue casters in the outer provinces, murmured claims that the Registry binds not magic, but the soul.
Structure
The order is stratified by both merit and metaphysical attunement. Its hierarchy includes:
- Magister Prima – The supreme judicial-mage and head of the Arcanii Council.
- High Conjurants – Regional overseers of arcane affairs and magical infrastructure.
- Lexmagi – Magistrates and legal arbiters of spellcraft.
- Custodians – Enforcers and nullification agents tasked with suppressing rogue sorcery.
- Initiates – Apprentices bound in silence until licensed.
Within Nova Roma, the Riftwatch Quarter serves as both university and citadel.
Public Agenda
The Arcanii exist to enforce the sacred equilibrium between power and purpose. Magic, untethered, is chaos; bound by law, it becomes civilization’s greatest servant. The Arcanii do not seek dominion over magic, but its proper stewardship — to ensure that no Riftborn force shall again shake the foundation of Nova Roma.
They offer security to the loyal and swift judgment to the reckless.
Religion
While officially non-theocratic, the Magisters Arcanii hold ceremonial ties to the Cultus Aeternum, particularly in veneration of Tharaxis, the Rift Moon. Some rites of binding incorporate invocations to Tharaxis, whose cycles are said to influence magical efficacy.
A minority sect within the Arcanii believes magic itself is divine — a heresy quietly tolerated but never sanctioned.
