High Conjurant
Triumvirs of Doctrine, Flame, and Arcane Order
"We do not shape the law — we name it, and let the flame do the rest."
The High Conjurants form the triumvirate that oversees the arcane and doctrinal integrity of the Magisters Arcanii. While the Magister Prima leads the Arcanii and renders ultimate judgment, the High Conjurants are its architects of law, ritual, and philosophical restraint.
They do not command legions nor enforce edicts, but what they declare lawful — or unlawful — ripples through every chamber of magic in the Imperium. Their vote can ignite schools of sorcery into sanctioned brilliance or smother them into forbidden ash.
Each High Conjurant embodies a doctrinal pillar: Preservation, Transformation, and Restriction. Together, they ensure that no one perspective dominates — and that magic serves both empire and soul.
Qualifications
Candidates must have served as Lexmagi or senior Arcanii scholars for no fewer than twenty years, with a record of at least one published doctrinal treatise cited by the Codex Tribunal.
Requirements
A unanimous vote by the Tribunal, ratification by the Prima, and a public recitation of their Doctrinal Thesis within the Chamber Trium under Tharaxis Zenith. Any wavering, error, or magical resonance during recital voids the appointment.
Appointment
New Conjurants are appointed by the Codex Tribunal from among senior Lexmagi or Arcanii scholars of twenty years’ service or more. Their selection must be unanimous, with a public reading of their doctrinal thesis in the Chamber Trium.
Always three:
- The Preserver – Upholds traditional forms and protective magics.
- The Transformer – Advocates for evolution in spellcraft and magical theory.
- The Restrictor – Ensures boundaries, forbids excess, and silences corruption.
Duties
The High Conjurants interpret and amend Tablet III of the Codex Exilia, known as the Arcane Doctrina. They preside over Arcanii Convocations, ritual audits, and doctrine review cycles, ensuring that arcane practice remains aligned with Imperium values.
They possess the power of Chorus Votum — a unanimous override that may nullify the ruling of a Lexmagus or even suspend entire rites if deemed doctrinally unsound.
Though they may not ascend to Magister Prima, their influence is unmatched in all doctrinal matters. They report directly to the Magister Prima, and their proposals must be ratified through the Prima’s Flame of Consent for elevation to law.
Responsibilities
High Conjurants oversee doctrinal law, interpret Tablet III, supervise Arcanii Convocations, and review or ratify magical theory for alignment with Imperium values. They also audit schools of magic and may silence any practice deemed heretical.
Benefits
Conjurants are granted access to the Ember Archive and Flame-Sealed Chambers, permanent residence in the Riftwatch Quarter, and may maintain a personal sanctum anywhere in the Imperium. Their writ may open or close ritual sites by decree.
Accoutrements & Equipment
Each bears a Doctrine Flame — a living ember bound in crystal that records their votes and doctrinal visions. Their robes are sealed with glyph-thread embroidery representing their doctrinal pillar. They wear a Trium Ring marked with the triple flame, which grants access to sealed rituals and overrides lesser Arcanii wards.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
Dismissal is rare and symbolically devastating. It requires a two-thirds vote from the full Codex Tribunal and direct approval by the Magister Prima. The Rite of Rescission, in which their Doctrine Flame is extinguished, is conducted in silence.
History
The office of the High Conjurants was not born of foresight, but of failure. In the second century AR, following the unchecked proliferation of soulbound sigilcraft and the tragic implosion of the Athal Rites, the Magister Prima at the time — Luceria Pellan — declared that magical doctrine could no longer be left to a single will.
Thus, in 187 AR, the Triumvirate was established: three voices to temper doctrine, each aligned to a different principle of arcane philosophy. The earliest years were turbulent, marked by duels of theory and even magical standstills, but over time, the doctrine pillars became codified as Preservation, Transformation, and Restriction.
Since their founding, the High Conjurants have outlawed twelve schools of unstable magic, reversed five public rituals, and ratified the sanctification of the Rite of Severance. They are often the final voice before a rite becomes law — and sometimes, the only voice that dares to say no.
Their greatest moment of unity came during the Nullfire Crisis of 413 AR, when a faction of renegade Lexmagi attempted to rewrite part of Tablet III. The Conjurants sealed the Chamber Trium and held vigil for three days, emerging with an edict that silenced the rebellion without a single spell cast.
To this day, their seal remains etched into the Codex: three flames, bound but unmerged.
Cultural Significance
While most citizens know the Magister Prima, it is the High Conjurants who decide what spells their children may study, what prayers their temples may chant, and which relics must remain buried. Their influence is subtle — but vast.
Among the Arcanii, to stand before the Triumvirate is to lay one’s theory bare. And few do so unshaken.
Notable Holders
Luceria Pellan — Then-Magister Prima who founded the office in 187 AR after the Athal Rites disaster. While she did not serve as a Conjurant, her doctrine shaped the role’s foundation.
Cael Ardonis, Preserver — Famous for preserving the Rite of Warding after its attempted declassification during the Flame Debates of 241 AR.
Sor Velemir, Restrictor — Outlawed dreambinding after the Exspecto Collapse; later died in silence beneath the Monastery of Still Ash.
Talia Rhen, Transformer — First to formally argue for cross-species magical schooling; her doctrines are still studied in provincial academies.
In foreign structures, they are often equated to Grand Viziers of Sorcery, Concordant Cardinals, or High Cantors of Doctrine — though the Arcanii find such comparisons reductive.
