"I was shocked to my core at what he told me, "are these buildings really 10,000 years old papa?" I had asked him in utter disbelief. That's where it all started I think, my fascination with the history we're standing in." - Ells, Worton. Letters from the Old World. Opulence, Scholar's Guild, 266 CA.
The apex of, what remains, of civilization. Cities of Everwealth and beyond, though nothing compared to what was taken by The Great Schism, are still without question the most privileged places for one to live; So long as they can afford the steep cost of living. Where most townships have little work to sustain their many hungry mouths to feed, or are entirely absent of schools to teach their children crucial skills like how to count and to spell; Cities have not only these, but hospitals, trained soldiers to protect them and markets with actually consistent stock to tally but few of the amenities most-everyone else living outside city-limits will never have; Unless of course they undertake a costly journey from their homes over many miles of unguarded roads where encountering cutthroats, wild animals and the like is all but certain. Even if you should find yourself, comparably, lucky enough to experience city life, taking shelter in new homes built from old factories, it helps not to attract too much attention. Albeit safer than the outside world, much the same in the city as everywhere else, you never know what wicked sort awaits you in the dark of the night. Swindlers, thieves, serial killers, just about every flavor of filth linger here in the gutters where guards are few and places to hide are many. Watching, waiting, for just one little slip to rip your coin or your life away as they do to someone every single day.
