Mara Stonehammer
Mara Stonehammer was an emigree from the Bulgorid Holdfast, a dwarf who carved out a living in the cracks of mercenary law. Alongside Grunk Ironhide and Rennik Blackthorn, she thrived in crime: burglary, forgery, smuggling, and anything else that could turn a quick profit without much risk.
Mara had heard about a fabled treasure hidden on Althena—the loot from a long dead North Sea raider. Her obsession only deepened when she learned Bravia itself was preparing to invade the island. In her mind, this was a chance to seize the prize before the armies trampled it underfoot—and to do it without splitting the haul three ways with Grunk and Rennik.
Her schemes, however, ran afoul of Bravia’s own authorities. Mara was arrested in Aurorhaven, ending up in the hands of Captain Medacnan, who had little patience for “independent operators.” She was held in the Assembly building, while Medacnan tried to gain as much out of Mara as possible.
Grunk and Rennik hatched a plan to bust her out. The result: chaos, fire, and Mara slipping through the cracks alongside the party. Once free, the tied to her old partners was severed, and she set sail to Althena with the party.
On the island, Mara pursued her treasure fever with the same single-mindedness that had carried her this far. She fought alongside the party, but always with one eye on the prize, her loyalty wavering whenever opportunity glittered in the shadows.
Her obsession came to a head when she crossed paths with Raulf, an associate during the planning stages of the treasure heist, who betrayed her by leaking information and sabotaging her path to the treasure. Raulf had made his way to Althena too, making use of what he'd learned from Mara to find the treasure with his own goons.
In the end, Mara’s scheming caught up with her. Her secrecy, paranoia, and refusal to trust anyone—even those who had fought beside her—eroded any goodwill she had left. When it became clear that she would never put the group above her own lust for treasure, the party chose the simplest solution: they killed her.
Mara Stonehammer died not as a legendary treasure-hunter, but as a liability removed by her own allies.
