Holy Order of Anubis
The Holy Order of Anubis is one of the most respected religious organizations in Draconia, though the general public tend to avoid close association with them. Their temples remain closed to the public except during funerals. Clerics and Monks live a cloistered life; monks serve as undertakers and morticians; clerics serve the function of performing various rituals during funerals.
Structure
See "Priesthood" below
Dicastery of the Monasteries
The Holy Order manages its monastic orders through the Director of the Final Rites. This leader must hold the rank of Keeper of the Veil (Quorum Rank). This guarantees that the Monks are directed by the spiritual authorities who oversee the precise Law of the Dead and assist with temple security and sacred rites.
Tenets of Faith
The faith of Anubis is dedicated to the objective truth of the soul and the maintenance of absolute order in the cycle of life and death. The ultimate goal of the faithful is to prepare their own heart and the hearts of the deceased for the Hall of Truth.
- Mors Initium (Death is the Beginning): The Order holds that death is the ultimate form of order and peace, not an end, but a Lawful transition to the Duat. The faithful must reject the fear of death, as it is a corrupting force of chaos.
- The Law of Justice: Every life must be lived with rigorous spiritual and mental discipline. The faithful must pursue objective justice and truth in all dealings, striving to live with such perfect integrity that their Ib (Heart) may balance the Feather of Truth without question.
- Sanctity of the Sepulchre: The body, being the necessary physical component for the Doctrine of Resurrection, must be protected and preserved. All acts of grave defilement, grave robbery, or the malicious animation of the dead (necromancy) are considered heinous crimes and acts of war against the Order.
- The Duty of the Psychopomp: The living faithful are charged with the solemn duty of guiding and protecting the newly departed soul. They must bring comfort and certainty to the bereaved, teaching them that transition is sure and that the loved one has entered an ordered peace.
Worship
The services of the Holy Order of Anubis are characterized by solemnity, scholarly pursuit, and rigorous discipline.
Everyday Practices (The Rites of Discipline)
- The Vigil of the Impartial Scale (Daily): A mandatory daily meditative ritual focused on absolute self-reflection and integrity, serving as the spiritual preparation for the Feather of Truth.
- The Litany of the Guide: A solemn daily prayer for the protection of all souls currently making their journey through the Duat, and for the strength of Anubis and his Paladins against grave defilers.
Weekly Service (The Study of the Rites)
- The Study of the Rites: This is the primary weekly service, dedicated entirely to scholarly pursuit—the study of theological law, jurisprudence, and the complex death rites.
Annual Festivals and Sacred Duties
- The Consecration of the Veil (Annual Festival): This is the public observance for all followers. It is a quiet, solemn holy day dedicated to the sanctity of all resting places, involving communal maintenance, preservation, and cleaning of cemeteries and burial grounds, reinforcing the duty of Protection of the Sepulchre. This public festival occurs concurrently with the private ritual performed by the top leadership (see Sealing of the Threshold below).
- The Funeral Rites: These are the highest, most sacred services of the Order. They involve the detailed physical preparation and spiritual guidance, ensuring the body is ready for Resurrection and the spirit is ready for the Hall of Truth.
Sealing of the Threshold
This ritual is the single most exclusive ceremony of the Holy Order of Anubis, performed to mystically renew the spiritual barrier that separates the realm of the living from the Duat.
Setting and Participants
- Setting: The Holy of Holies in the Grand Temple of Anubis. The room is deliberately empty save for the single stone altar standing before the heavy, symbolic Veil.
- Participants: The ceremony is performed exclusively by the High Priest of Anubis (The Sentinel of Final Repose) and The Quorum of Seven Keepers of the Veil.
The Ceremony of Sealing
- Entry and Repose: The leadership enters the Holy of Holies and establishes a period of absolute silence and profound meditation. They cleanse the space and their minds of all chaotic mortal thoughts, establishing a perfect spiritual Repose suitable for invoking the Law of the Dead.
- The Law of Impartiality (Justice): The High Priest approaches the bare stone altar. Using a ritual implement—a symbolic representation of the Feather of Truth—he traces a complex, invisible runic glyph of Justice and Impartiality onto the altar's surface. This act invokes Anubis's eternal role in the weighing of the heart.
- The Affirmation of the Veil (Protection): The Quorum of Seven Keepers of the Veil forms an unbroken circle at the altar. The High Priest then kneels before the altar, facing the Veil. Together, they collectively recite, from memory, the sacred Prayer of Affirmation. This recitation channels their combined spiritual authority into the Veil, mystically renewing its protective warding against the forces of chaos and defilement.
- The Final Decree: The ceremony concludes with the High Priest touching the Veil and proclaiming a private, annual decree—a final vow to Anubis to maintain the sanctity and Law of the Dead for the coming year. The Quorum then silently departs.
