Funerals

History

Funerals in Draconia are a religious affair. Anubis, as the God of Death, is responsible for creating the funeral rituals in Draconia. His priests are the ones who perform the rituals. The priests of Osiris are specifically charged with preparing the deceased to meet the judgement of Osiris. Because the heart plays a critical role in this judgement, the priests of Anubis leave the heart in the body. If the deceased was a great inventor, scientist, magician, etc., their Brain is taken by the priests of Thoth and offered up to the god.

Execution

The priests of Anubis were always given the body first. They had to make sure that everything was prepared. The funeral service is performed at a Temple of Anubis. Close family and friends would then accompany the body on its journey to the Temple of Osiris, where the priests there would perform the ceremonies relevant to judgement; a single priest of Anubis must stay with the body until burial. At the Temple of Osiris, there would be a smaller service. The body would then be taken to its final resting place, often a cemetery dedicated to Anubis. Only two people, chosen by the person before death, can accompany the body to the burial. The priest of Anubis would perform the final rituals pertaining to burial, which involve protections so that the deceased may return and collect their body after being judged. The body is always taken to the closest cemetery to the west of the Temple of Osiris. Temples of Anubis are always east of a corresponding Temple of Osiris; they are often connected to each other.

Special Circumstances

People who leave a big enough mark on the world can often be honored by the Grand Temples of Anubis and Osiris by having their funerals performed there. When this is the case, the High Priests of Anubis and Osiris are often involved, though it is uncommon for the High Priest of Anubis to be the one to accompany the body outside the Grand Temple. The cemetery that the body is taken to is the Sacred Cemetery of the Mountain (at the Mountains of the West, the western-most point of Draconia and the gateway to the Offering Fields). The first Supreme Dragon was given this honor, as was Riffin Wayfalls, the first President of the Supreme Republic of Talle.
