High Priest of Anubis
This is the highest rank within the Order of Anubis. It functions similarly to equivalent positions in the other Pharaonic religions.
Qualifications
The High Priest is chosen from one of the 7 Wandering Cardinals of Anubis.
Appointment
The 7 Wandering Cardinals choose a new High Priest after considering the matter through prayer and meditation, during which time the will of Anubis is made manifest. The High Priest of Osiris anoints and ordains the new High Priest of Anubis.
Duties
The High Priest has the following primary duties:
- Serves as the primary spiritual advisor to all the followers of Anubis,
- Oversee the temporal needs of the Holy Order,
- Oversee the training of new priests,
- Preside over funerals performed at the Grand Temple,
- Be the chief interpreter of the word of Anubis,
- Serve as the mouthpiece of Anubis to all people.
Benefits
The High Priest has his primary lodgings at the Grand Temple of Anubis. He is unpaid, as all of his needs are provided for by the Holy Order.
Accoutrements & Equipment
The High Priest of Anubis wears robes similar to all the High Priestly robes in the Pharaonic religions. One notable difference is that the High Priest of Anubis wears robes of pure black, symbolizing his connection to death. In addition, he wears an undergarment of purest white, symbolizing the fact that new life is found within and beyond death. During funerals, he, like the Temple Priests below him, adorns a large head in the image of a jackal, the sacred animal of Anubis. Around his neck, he wears an Ankh pendant, which is the symbol of life.
