Alvin's Spyglass

Archivist's Excerpt from: Trinkets, Tech, & Tinkery: A Comprehensive Inventory of All Possible Equipment One Might Need When Circumnavigating the World, Inside & Out, Tabletop Edition, CVI 42.5

The Spyglass Telescope of Alvin Esker is quite the important little artifact of the story of Orphan Towne and the Great Initiative. Originally crafted for Agnes Esker by her brother Alphonse Esker, both a Brazesmith Third Class and a Lensbender Third Class, it was one of the central instruments for her astronomical pursuits while studying cosmic physics during the drafting of The Metarcanum: A Theory of Linguistic Constitution of Matter, Energy, & Form.

Following the tragedy of her death in № 138 Cavendish, the Telescope passed to her youngest brother Alvin Esker, as he shared a love of astronomy with his sister, albeit in a far more juvenile sense that her own purposes. As something of a memorial to her, he could unscrew the aperture lens and carry it around in his Satchel, until it accompanied him on a rather undesired and unexpected journey across The Expanse with one Hana Sóholdt, who thought it was a stupid waste of weight.

Tragically, the Telescope is no more, having gone the way of its original owner. Following a bad denting during an incident when it was thoughtlessly used as a prybar to save the leg of a young lady who thought it was a stupid waste of weight, and then after a rather odd incident when it was briefly used as a combat implement on board an ancient shipwreck that, at the time, was flying over a dry lakebed on a wave of levitating rock, the poor astronomical instrument was too damaged to serve its purpose, or any other. It was buried in the Northern Steppes, just passed the Lakebed, under a pile of rocks, rather unceremoniously. It would have been destroyed with the rest of The Expanse in the final minutes of the Great Initiative, making one wonder what the purpose was in burying the ruddy thing in the first place.
