Hiro was born in
Azuri in 601 F. to
Avavia and
Aywin Diederich. He was part of a set of quintuplets - his siblings being named
Lameles,
Nonaei,
Echonele and
Talivien. Hiro was the oldest of his clutch and acted like it growing up. He frequently defended his siblings from harm and often found himself in trouble with
Coralla - the arch-siren of Azuri.
His mother had a further clutch of full sirens with his step-parent,
Talolyn. This was a set of triplets and were name
Nahlori,
Chellena and
Alumere. Hiro also acted as an older sibling to these three and never defaulted in caring for them - despite his relationship with Talolyn being rocky at times.
From a young age, Hiro was always hailed as being a fantastic hunter. Young sirens were always trained with fish in mind at first and Hiro excelled in this. He was raised under the siren teachings that he would be hunting land-dwellers once he came of age - which Hiro never questioned.
Whilst he excelled in hunting, he also excelled in his education. He learnt a great number of languages for the world above - to enchant any land-dwellers into his clutches. He was renowned as the legacy of Avavia.
When Hiro became of age, he demonstrated his ability to skilfully hunt land-dwellers - especially those who appeared on ships across The Coral Deep. He would even tempt fate a few times and drag an isolated land-dweller to their doom from the nearby beach of Fallkirk. For a while, Hiro and his family maintained a good hunting status quo and were one of the more successful groups in Azuri's hunting.
Because of Hiro's status, the sirens in his clan decided to fulfil the tradition to arrange Hiro with a suitable mate - which was a pure-blood siren called
Nahlise, in the hopes they would produce more siren children. Hiro was never comfortable with the union, but this was his culture and he went along with it anyway. Nahlise and Hiro got along reasonably well anyway, and sirens usually mated until viable offspring were produced and then moved on. Eventually, Hiro ended up falling pregnant with Nahlise's children - however, within the first trimester of his pregnancy, Hiro and his siblings started forming regular hunts. These hunts started off fine in the beginning, they killed plenty of land dwellers - until the land-dwellers started fighting back. Hiro's siblings started being killed one by one and he was unable to do much about it. Eventually he tried saving his younger sibling Talivien but as a result was shot with a harpoon gun and lost consciousness.
Hiro eventually washed ashore, his body changing into a half-elf form now that he was out of water. Bleeding out and injured, he swum in and out of consciousness - until
Airo Yukimura discovered him and brought him back to health. When he awoke, at first he was in shock and scared of what this land-dweller was going to do with him but Airo was kind and understanding. Hiro realised that Airo did not know he was a siren and he decided to go along with the facade that he was a half-elf who was injured at sea.
After spending a few weeks recovering, Hiro realised that he had definitely lost his clutch. He found himself relieved of this and slowly realised that he had an option for a new life above sea where he didn't need to conform to their society's expectation. He started getting along with Airo and his sister
Usui Yukimura, growing closer and closer to them. Eventually, he came to the conclusion that land-dwellers were never as bad as the sirens used to make off. He decided to remain in
Fallkirk with Airo and Usui and eventually return to Azuri.
For a few years, they remained in Fallkirk. Airo and Hiro quickly developed romantic feelings for each other, but both kept them secret as they valued their new friendship more than a potential relationship. Eventually, they needed to move to
Winterwatch to obtain more money to survive, due to the factory in Fallkirk shutting down where Airo worked. Airo obtained a job with the Quadshadow Factory to help pay for the machine he'd created to help Usui live when she contracted Blood Fever - however, he was injured and lost his leg in an incident at work. Hiro was the first to respond and spent most of his time trying to help him heal both physically and emotionally.
Hiro ended up working to support the Airo and Usui as much as he could. He tried working in restaurants and as a servant for the mayor, but the money was not enough. He realised there was one thing he could do - prostitution. He went out one night and ended up finding a few men who were interesting in paying Hiro for his services. He returned in the early hours of the next day with a few gold pieces which should help pay for rent for a month or two. Airo queried where Hiro got the money from but Hiro avoided confessing how he achieved the money. Eventually, Airo managed to find out how Hiro got the money and begged him not to sell himself for their sake as it was far too dangerous to do so in Winterwatch. Hiro felt bad and wished to continue in order for them to get enough money to eat but ended up agreeing not to resort to prostitution anymore. He continued to try and find a more stable job - but unfortunately, Usui passed due to her condition.
Airo and Hiro both grieved. Hiro refuted Airo's belief that this was his fault this and spent a largely amount of time comforting and supporting Airo through the grief. Eventually, they lost the apartment they were living in and for a while lived on the streets together. Hiro caught hypothermia during the winter and got sick very quickly. Airo tried to get a doctor to look at him - but everyone would refuse and needed payment up front for the treatment. Airo took Hiro into The Sacred Drum Bar to try and warm him up at least for a bit - which is how they met
Nardina Whitthane. She helped Hiro recover for free, and thankfully no further complications arose. She offered to give them a place to stay until they recovered in her room - free of charge. After that, they thanked Nardina and left to try and find a place to stay.
Eventually, Airo found out that under the Quadshadow Factory was an unused basement which they could access. They set up a makeshift home under the factory - and for a few weeks they remained down there whilst the two would attempt to get as much food as they could to survive. Eventually, Airo realised that the basement still has entry to the Quadshadow factory, and began to steal equipment and metal from the factory to begin a small business in providing prosthetic limbs to people who can't afford them so that they can return to work and continue surviving. For a while, they got by on this business. Eventually they picked up the members of their group and housed them in the hideout. When Nardina was kicked out and
Yanys Cinxaak lost her foot in the mines, Airo repaid her for her help with Hiro by allowing them to live with him and created a prosthetic foot for Yanys. Airo also found
Mizys Selde close to death in the streets due to her heart condition and nursed her back to help whilst creating a make-shift pacemaker for her. Mizys then remained with the group. Airo also found
Kyxes Arvis running from the law with no where to go, and offered up a place in the basement for him. Kyxes in exchange helped people get through Winterwatch to Airo's hideout to get the help they needed.
When
Grifiya Valfina,
Aust Madden and
Gaak Falcon arrive in the group and they start investigating murders across Winterwatch, Hiro gets revealed as a half-siren. Hiro is terrified that he may be cast out due to his siren heritage or killed as a result. He flees after Airo starts doubting their friendship - to which he is dragged under Nartarc Basin by his mother who was causing the deaths in Winterwatch. After seeing him transform and them fighting Hiro's mother - Airo confesses to Hiro and kisses him whilst in his siren form. Hiro confesses he had never used his charm on him and that their love is genuine. They finally began their relationship.
When investigating the mines, Hiro is severely injured by an Umber Hulk to which he is rescued by Airo and Grifiya.
During the Winterwatch Revolution, Hiro is arrested by Marxion and imprisoned in
Winterwatch Jail. When Kyxes springs them from jail, they confront Marxion and defeat him - but are forced to flee due to the violence in Winterwatch. Airo's hideout is destroyed in the revolution due to the Quadshadow Factories being destroyed. When they arrive in
Goldenleaf, Hiro ends up being trapped in the Goldenleaf attack and is brutally murdered defending the
Goldenleaf Orc Settlement from harm. He was pinned down and had his limbs torn off - then placed on display on spikes around the Orc Settlement. However, Grifiya manages to commune with
Fenmarel and revives Hiro. Hiro still bares the scars from the attack however and the memories up until he finally died which caused him to have severe PTSD.
When they return to Winterwatch, Airo proposes to Hiro in a hotel retreat which Grifiya planned for them - which Hiro accepts. Two years after the incident with Morality, Airo and Hiro get married. Winterwatch's community raised enough money for the two to get married to thank them for the help they've provided over the years, Grifiya officiated their wedding due to her position as
Inquisitor.
In 774 F., Hiro and Airo begin to try for a child. Due to Hiro's siren heritage, Hiro would be able to carry a child to term. However, after falling pregnant multiple times, all of the brief pregnancies ended in a miscarriage. Hiro and Airo were both devastated and this cause a small strain on their relationship. In late 775 F., Airo also received news that
Blood Fever research believed that it may be an inherited condition. This pormpted Airo to ask Hiro for them to stop trying for children for the time being, as he did not wish for them to have a child if they may inherit Blood Fever from him.
In 776 F., Hiro receives a letter from his mother stating that the
Sirelore clan is currently conducting too many attacks on around their clan,
Azuri. They both suspect something more is going on and wish for their clans to remain hidden, otherwise they may be wiped out by land-dwellers. Hiro asks for help from
Grifiya Valfina, due to her position she could act as a mediator for both sides if needed.
During this time, Hiro discovers that he's pregnant with Airo's child, on accident. However, he decided to keep this from the others, as he believed it would end in miscarriage, anyway. Along with the additional stress of Blood Fever's causes, to him it was the best option to keep quiet.
During their time in
Azuri, there are a few cases of Blood Fever in the clan's quarantine. With the help of
Fenmarel, Hiro finds out that he currently has a mild form of Blood Fever. Hiro recognises this is more than likely due to him being pregnant or due to his close proximity of
Usui Yukimura when she was sick. He does not confide in Airo over this.
The group infiltrate
Sirelore and find
The Journal of Maithoe. The contents explain the origins of Blood Fever as a biochemical weapons against land-dwellers developed by sirens in both Azuri and Sirelore. Hiro was aware of the weapon, but not of the details and is distraught over this information.
However, Airo finds out about this and accuses Hiro of being the cause of his family's death, as even if he knew back then he wouldn't speak out against it. The two fight, leaving Hiro by himself regretting his past actions and realising that maybe their marriage is doomed. When the group fall asleep, Hiro sneaks out to
Sirelore to try and make it right.
However, whilst trying to infiltrate
Maithoe's study for more evidence for a cure, he is caught by them. Maithoe imprisons him into one of their cells whilst letting him suffer to the sound of the captured
Leviathan. Maithoe discovers that Hiro has a form of
Blood Fever due to his pregnancy and decides to study him until he gives birth to see the effects of the condition.
When Grifiya and her group show up the next day, they find him in a nervous state. This is due to the studies and the sound of the Leviathan injuring him. The group are also captured and Hiro's secret is revealed to the group - Maithoe antagonises the group over Hiro's deception to which he hides away in his cell in shame.
However, once Grifiya controls Maithoe and frees the group, Airo and Hiro reunite. They both apologise and realise that they both love each other and that the past is in the past. After the group free
Sirelore and
Kyrissa from Maithoe's control, they return to Azuri.
However,
Coralla demands the research on Blood Fever to continue it's experimentation. The group stop her using Maithoe's powers and she is removed from the throne. Kyrissa suggests that Hiro inherit the throne, however Hiro rejects this - wanting to return to the surface to remain with his new family. Kyrissa accepts this and instead selects
Nahlise who then becomes the new Arch-Siren of Azuri.
The group part from Azuri and return to the surface, now creating connections to the sirens to maintain peace and funding research into Blood Fever. A few weeks after returning, Hiro asks Grifiya to arrange and announcement in Winterwatch. He uses this as a platform to promote peace between sirens and land-dwellers and revealing himself as a half-siren. He started a charity called SeaLink which promotes the banning of siren hunting.
This causes a number of incidents towards Hiro as he lives in Winterwatch, with a lot of people claiming that he only charmed Airo in for his money and wasn't to be trusted. However, Hiro maintained his peaceful stance and rarely rose to the bait. This, however, did not stop some attacks on him. One notable incident was an attack in Winterwatch where a human male tried to grab Hiro and stab him. However, the guards from
Grifiya’s Inquisition were present at the time and managed to prevent them from hurting Hiro, albeit from a few cuts on his hands trying to stop the blade from reach his body.
After a while, the popular opinion started to die down due to the Inquisition's defence of Hiro. Which, thankfully, happened when Hiro started experiencing the issues surrounding his pregnancy. At around five months in, he started vomiting light amounts of blood. Prompting Airo to fear that he had now developed Blood Fever as well. He took Hiro to the research centre who confirmed that he did not have it and this was the effect the fetus is having on his body. The research centre stated that they hadn't developed a cure, but a way to offset the symptoms and halt the condition. However, it was still being tested and wouldn't be ready for a while.
