Airo Yukimura

Airo Yukimura

"Honestly, he needs to stop obsessing over his work. I understand there's a personal element to it, but he's driven himself into a depressive slump a number of times trying to perfect his machines. I think he's still wracked with guilt over the death of his sister." - Mizys Selde, 768 F.

Personal history

Airo was born in 743 F. to Hotaru and Ichirou Yukimura, in Fallkirk. It was a surprisingly easy birth, with minimum complications. Airo was always a well behaved child and always found interest in his father's job in the local factory where they made machines for the farmlands which surrounded them.   When Airo was five years old, his mother gave birth to his younger sister Usui. In comparison to Airo's birth, Usui's was long and painful. Airo vividly remembers watching his mother during the labour screaming in pain from a gap in the door. Unfortunately, his mother passed shortly after giving birth to Usui. He later learns this is due to an illness called Blood Fever, which will devastate his family further as he grows older.   From then on, Airo's father looked after both of his children. He had to work hard to support them both and Airo frequently found himself being responsible for Usui when his father left for work and couldn't find anyone to look after the two siblings. Airo didn't have much of a childhood due to this. Though, Usui and him became close in these times and always stood by each other when the times became hard.   When Airo was sixteen, his father also fell ill due to the Blood Fever. Airo spent a few months looking after him, but ultimately his father was to perish to the illness as well - leaving the siblings orphaned. Around this time is when Airo started to become more irritable and short with people, but still retained the goodness in his heart.   He got a job in the factory where his father worked to support him and Usui shortly after and quickly learnt how to form working machines. From this he formed a hobby of creating machines to help certain issues such as prosthetic limbs, devices to help respiratory diseases and - hopefully, to help people through the Blood Fever.   When he was eighteen, he found Hiro Diederich washed up on the beach, bleeding out from a wound on his side. Airo took him back to the house and Usui and him nursed him back to health. Within the time Hiro spent in Airo's home recovering, they became quite close. Hiro had a good relationship with Usui (Airo's sick sister) and helped her out once recovered.   For a few years, Airo and Hiro lived in Fallkirk with Usui. Airo and Hiro quickly developed romantic feelings for each other, but both kept them secret as they valued their friendship more than a potential relationship. Eventually, they needed to move to Winterwatch to obtain more money to survive, due to the factory in Fallkirk shutting down. Airo obtained a job with the Quadshadow Factory to help pay for the machine he'd created to help Usui live when she contracted Blood Fever - however, he was injured and lost his leg in an incident at work. Hiro was the first to respond and spent most of his time trying to help him heal both physically and emotionally. Hiro ended up working to support the Airo and Usui as much as he could - but unfortunately, Usui passed due to her condition.   Airo and Hiro both grieved, but Airo primarily blamed himself for Usui's death as he viewed that he could have completed the machine if he hadn't lost his leg. Hiro refuted this and spent a largely amount of time comforting and supporting Airo through the grief. Eventually, they lost the apartment they were living in and for a while lived on the streets together. Hiro caught hypothermia during the winter and got sick very quickly. Airo tried to get a doctor to look at him - but everyone would refuse and needed payment up front for the treatment. Airo took Hiro into The Sacred Drum Bar to try and warm him up at least for a bit - which is how they met Nardina Whitthane. She helped Hiro recover for free, and thankfully no further complications arose. She offered to give them a place to stay until they recovered in her room - free of charge. Airo was relieved that Hiro recovered - almost confessing to him in the emotional moment, but held back as he knew he was sick and would be unable to provide a rational thought response. After that, they thanked Nardina and left to try and find a place to stay. Eventually, Airo found out that under the Quadshadow Factory was an unused basement which they could access. They eventually set up a makeshift home under the factory - and for a few weeks they remained down there and the two would attempt to get as much food as they could to survive. Eventually, Airo realised that the basement still has entry to the Quadshadow factory, and began to steal equipment and metal from the factory to begin a small business in providing prosthetic limbs to people who can't afford them so that they can return to work and continue surviving. For a while, they got by on this business. Eventually they picked up the members of their group and housed them in the hideout. When Nardina was kicked out and Yanys lost her foot in the mines, Airo repaid her for her help with Hiro by allowing them to live with him and created a prosthetic foot for Yanys. Airo also found Mizys close to death in the streets due to her heart condition and nursed her back to help whilst creating a make-shift pacemaker for her. Mizys then remained with the group. Airo also found Kyxes running from the law with no where to go, and offered up a place in the basement for him. Kyxes in exchange helped people get through Winterwatch to Airo's hideout to get the help they needed. When Grifiya, Aust and Gaak arrive in the group and they start investigating incidents across Winterwatch, Hiro gets revealed as a half-siren. Airo initially worries that his feelings might have been caused by Hiro's magic, but they quickly learn that Hiro had never used his charm on Airo - even when he first arrived on land. After seeing him transform and them fighting Hiro's mother - Airo confesses to Hiro and kisses him whilst in his siren form. They finally began their relationship.   When investigating the mines, Airo reveals that he has stolen a gun from the Quadshadow factory which has not been released yet to the public. He uses this to defend Hiro from getting injured further from an Umber Hulk and they both get severely injured in the process.   During the Winterwatch Revolution, Airo is arrested by Marxion and imprisoned in Winterwatch Jail. When Kyxes springs them from jail, they confront Marxion and defeat him - but are forced to flee due to the violence in Winterwatch. Airo's hideout is destroyed in the revolution due to the Quadshadow Factories being destroyed. When they arrive in Goldenleaf, Hiro ends up being trapped in the Goldenleaf attack and is brutally murdered defending the Orc Settlement from harm. Airo witnesses this and breaks down in grief, lashing out at everyone for leaving him behind. He even threatened Moira with his gun when she returns as he viewed that she was responsible for his death. After Hiro's death, Airo becomes extremely angry and withdrawn and rarely engages in conversations. However, Grifiya manages to commune with Fenmarel and revives Hiro. Upon seeing Hiro again, Airo is overcome with relief and cried with relief to see him again. When in Fraenia, Airo had been using personal tools to try and refine a ring to propose to Hiro. Grifiya helps Airo find a sapphire to add to the ring, and when they return to Winterwatch, Airo proposes to Hiro in a hotel retreat which Grifiya planned for them - which Hiro accepts. Two years after the incident with Morality, Airo and Hiro get married. Witnerwatch's community raised enough money for the two to get married to thank them for the help they've provided over the years. Four years after that, Hiro falls pregnant with Airo's triplets (due to his siren heritage, he would usually have a clutch of seven at maximum) and gives birth to Aerial, Thalaris and Athena. Airo dies in 834 F. due to old age, and his husband follows soon after.

Education

Airo got most of his education from his mother until he was five. After she died, his father tried to teach him as much as he could but Airo was mainly responsible for his own education from ten on wards. He read a lot of books in the process and learnt a wide variety of subjects and taught those to Usui.   He learnt his mechanic skills in the local factory in Fallkirk and improved on them as a hobby. He also improved on them when working in Winterwatch - both in the Quadshadow factory and in his own business.

Employment

At age sixteen, he got a job in the local factory in Fallkirk as a mechanic for machines.   At age 20, he relocated to Winterwatch to work in the Quadshadow factories - but at age 21 he was forced to stop working there as he lost his leg to an incident with the machines there.   At age 23, he started his own small business under the Quadshaodw factory to provide prosthetic limbs to those who needed them to survive and get jobs.   At age 27, his business became official and he managed to start making profits from it for upgraded elements and new machines being patented. He also started Winterwatch's first union for factory workers and helped them achieve sick pay, worker rights and fair wages.

Accomplishments & Achievements

When Airo succeeded in making the pacemaker for Mizys and helped her survive, it was the first step forward in realising that he can help people.   When he started his business officially and founded his union for Winterwatch workers - he actively saw the change in people's livelihood and felt proud of the changes that he's brought about.

Failures & Embarrassments

The death of his sister felt his own failure as he couldn't finish the machine to help her survive quick enough.   Failing to protect Hiro in Goldenleaf. However, this was resolved when Grifiya revived him in Swamphollow.

Mental Trauma

Depression, anger issues. He also has Phasmophobia - fear of ghosts.

Intellectual Characteristics

He is extremely logical in resolving problems but can often let his emotions get the better of him which would throw the logical aspect of him out the window.

Within the time Hiro spent in Airo's home recovering, they became quite close. Hiro had a good relationship with Usui (Airo's sick sister) and helped her out once recovered.
