Housecarls are sworn warrior-retainers of
Iskjin Jarls. Unlike common warriors, raiders, or militiamen, Housecarls are full-time soldiers who live in the
Jarl's Grand Hall, eat at his table, bear his clan shield, and defend his life and honor. They are a visible symbol of the
Jarl's wealth and power, for only those of means can maintain such company.
Duites
Bodyguards
Housecarls stand as the first and last line of defense for their
Jarl.
Enforcers
They carry out he
Jarl's justice within the clan's holdings.
Shield-Wall
Housecarls are the backbone of the
Jarl's warband, anchoring the shield-wall and setting the standard for lesser retainers, raiders, and militiamen.
Companions
Housecarls often advise or accompany their
Jarl on diplomatic or religious ventures, acting as both muscle and trusted retainers.
Oaths & Loyalty
A Housecarl's oath is sworn not only to the
Jarl, but to the clan as a whole. In swearing oaths and taking up the responsibility of a Housecarl, the individual becomes an official clan member, forgoing any previous clan allegiances. In return, Housecarls are rewarded with silver, fine arms and armor, the best warrior's training, and places of honor in the
Jarl's Great Hall.
Equipment
Housecarls are far better outfitted than other warriors of
The Wildlands. Mail shirts, strong round shields painted with clan heraldry, and well forged axes, swords, or spears are standard rather than luxury. As
Runesmithing has sprung up recently, some Housecarls are even granted arms and armor with runes etched into them, further enhancing their abilities on the battlefield.
Organization
Training
Housecarls are among the most organized and well-trained soldiers in
The Wildlands. These professional warriors are known for their shield-wall tactics, incredible discipline, and perfect technique. Being professional soldiers, they are allotted more time for training and preparing for warfare than any other combatants they come across.
Numbers
Numbers vary by the
Jarl's wealth. A minor
Jarl may only have a handful of Housecarls, while a powerful ruler could field dozens.
Hierarchy
Minor
Jarls typically employ no true hierarchy among their few Housecarls, but once a
Jarl's retinue grows around the double digit mark, Senior Housecarls, typically veterans, act as captains, commanding younger members and drilling them in formation.
Status
Though commoners by birth, Housecarls enjoy privileges equal to lesser nobility. Their joining the clan makes them true clan members, a rank and status above that of ordinary citizens of nameless families. A Housecarl's word carries weight, and their presence commands respect.
