Biography

The Toracsi family was well-positioned to support a young arcane prodigy. One of the first elven lineages to gain patriar status in Vay Proper, generations of Toracsi scientists, educators, and mages attained high positions in the lecture halls and board rooms of great Vayan universities. Satuj's mother Zaunia Toracsi was no exception; though she drifted from the high-concept scholarship of the Myth and the Otherworld pursued by her parents, she was adept with applied magic. A shared interest in the elven magical tradition of bladesinging drew Zaunia into a relationship with a human, Kalikor Sorio, whose proletar origins were met with disdain by Zaunia's family, though Zaunia and Kalikor married regardless of this tension.   For centuries, folk wisdom held that kalashtar were always part of a pair of twins, one a kalashtar and the other a different variety of Otherborn; there could be no solo-born kalashtar, and no kalashtar with twin siblings that were not also Otherborn. For the most part, observed reality validated—and likely created—this belief. But the children of Kalikor Sorio and Zaunia Toracsi would falsify this theory, though they were not recognized as doing so until adulthood. In the minutes approaching midnight on New Year's Eve, 689, Zaunia gave birth to a strong and healthy half-elven child, Sesuj Toracsi, the first of two twins. Shortly after, the hour, the day, and the year changed, and in the first few minutes of New Year's Day, 690, the second twin was born, Satuj Toracsi, who was at birth a weak and sickly child.   Satuj recounted later in life that they hid their kalashtar status from childhood onwards. In doing so, they concealed an unusually-involved relationship with the Other being with whom they drew their psionic power. This being, identified by Satuj as an Old Other called Segeonoc, served as an inspiration for Satuj's early interest in the Myth and the Otherworld. Satuj experienced their Other as a companion, a voice in their head, and a guide. As Satuj began to show substantial inherent potential for arcane magic in their youth, their Other influenced their courses of study accordingly. By the time they were a teenager, Satuj was known to be startlingly adept with matters of the arcane, and the Toracsi family flexed all the influence they had to cultivate Satuj's development into a mage. As the rare and perhaps unique case of kalashtar and non-Otherborn twins, Satuj and Sesuj were set up from birth to be an odd pair, and their relationship would ultimately be complicated by Zaunia's decision to enroll 12-year-old Sesuj in a covert experimental program to forge them into a devoted, vigilant, and lethal bodyguard for the burgeoning prodigy Satuj, a program from which Sesuj returned at the age of 17, now fully in service to their prodigy of a twin.   Following an early novitiate's degree through the University of Vay Proper and a master's degree at the Cassius Bellator School, Satuj's interests led them—and their duty-bound twin—to an internship that turned into a research position at Eclipse International (EI). Driven by an increasingly unstable combination of the ambition to produce a truly novel finding and a desire for contact with their distant but everpresent Other, Satuj designed a project that was, in theory, intended to draw energy from the Otherworld, an aim that EI's executive board saw as a potentially invaluable profit source. But rather than the end, the energy, Satuj's true investment was with the means, the act of piercing through the Myth for access to the Otherworld. When Satuj finally deployed their invention, the result was the Severing. The vast majority of people in Vay Proper at the time were killed, many instantly and many others in the building collapses that followed. Satuj, at the time, attributed the guidance of their Other to their nearly miraculous survival.   The private desire to see the Myth split open and the Otherworld united with the mortal world lingered with Satuj for the few years that followed. In that time, Satuj and Sesuj became involved with—and then members of—the Consequences. Having spent years in the aftermath of the Severing, and newly united with Mor Bulgumri, an individual with a uniquely personal perspective on the Myth and the damage done to it, Satuj's resolve ultimately hardened against their long-time companion, their Other, and in late 717, Satuj trapped and slew their Other with the help of their compatriots. Now, Satuj exists in an all-but-unheard-of state, a kalashtar with no link to an Other.   As part of the Consequences, Satuj was involved in the acquisition and release of a trove of documents detailing the Federation's centuries-long history of human experimentation and other rights abuses; the restoration of the Myth; and the restructuring and reform of the Federal government.

Personal Life

As of 718, Satuj serves as an ambassador to Norsivar. Presently, they are traveling through southern coastal Norsivar, forging connections with the local governments that have sprung up to take the place of the absent Norsivaran state. Satuj parted ways with their twin following the reform efforts; Sesuj remains in the Federation as a bodyguard to Novia Celsa. Satuj's primary traveling companion is their partner, Mor Bulgumri, an Elasirilian expatriate believed by many to be a prophet of the newborn god Liata.
