Wizard

Scholars of the Anon

When most hear the term 'wizard' images of adventurers come to mind, or of wise old men in towers Casting lighting for the sky or lifting mountains off the world. Though there is some truth to this, mostly this view of wizards comes from fanciful cradle-tales and stories rather than reality. Primarily, wizards are scholars who study the Magic of the world, the force known as the Anon. They work to unravel the mysteries of magic through ages of study, theories, and test. Scholastic endeavors and research, however, does not necessarily mean practical use, and many so-called wizards understand the theory of magic without every using it.

It is believed that the Elf and Fairy that first harnessed the Anon into useable magic. Their bodies and blood, their very being, like Dragon and other magical races, are intertwined with the magic of the world. It is believed that through the elves that Human gained the ability to connect with this power. Ages of intermingling, descendant after descendant of elf and human, has passed this genetic code onto the human race. It is these humans with elven blood in their ancient ancestry that can use magic in the modern day, to varying degrees. Many join a wizarding college to harness the power within. This is especially true among the Normon cultures, whose ancestors were closely connected to the elves of their region. This shared heritage is so pervasive in Novyum that nearly every Normon has some elven blood in their lineage. Which is why nearly every wizarding college of Ethae can be found in, or around, the Heartlands. It is also why the most famous wizards of legend are from Novya cultures, and why it is common to find Normon's of all walks of life with some casting ability, albeit simple cantrips like creating temporary lights or starting cooking fires.

Every being with this elven heritage has the potential of being a Sorcerer or a wizard. Most become wizards. Wizardry is the study, and attempt, in use of magic as a science. For the wizards, the nature of the Anon must be understood. The sad truth of this however is that the majority of those with the ability to cast never have a chance to become a wizard. The common folk and the poor miss this vital education needed tap into their potential from the expensive colleges across their lands. This is often why, while so many have the ability, only the noble families excel in the magical sciences and arts.

Where sorcerer will learn to channel their internal magic, the Daanan, out into the world, wizards educate themselves in the safer method of keeping that power within, only using enough to manipulate the external magic of the world, the Solanon. When casting, that internal energy stirs, wanting out. This is why wizards spend years educating themselves, mastering the control of that power. For the wizard, mastering the magic is the goal.

To aid in this control of the Anon around them, as well as add a layer of protection, many wizards will add a Wand, Staff, or Rod to their casting style. These items become conduits of the Daanan from their wizards. The item, bonded to the wizard, stores the power, and wizards uses this stored energy to manipulate the magic around themselves rather than drawing from within each time. Note, wands, staffs, and rods are not required to cast, they only aid in the control and saftey of casting. Many wizards favor these tools to make for easier casting, but none are required to cast.

Wizards are becoming something of a dying breed in the Novyum Age. Diviner are being replaced by Trijan Bishop as advisors in noble courts. Nations are establishing laws forbidding advanced 'combat' based evocation and abjuration magic. the Church has discouraged the young generations for pursuing the ancient sciences of magic use, even banning books to limit the study. The use of magic is becoming a thing of the past. More often than not in the modern day, wizards are old men and women huddled away in their libraries and laboratories, studying and sharing in their every shrinking community.

Schools of Wizardry

Abjurer: the study of protection

Diviner: the study of understanding

Evoker: the study of creating

Illusionist: the study of illusion

Note: to understand the difference between a wizard and a sorcerer, one must look at how they learn to manipulate magic. A Wizard learns to use that internal power, the Daanan, to move and alter the magic outside their bodies, what is known as Solanon. Sorcerers, on the other hand, have learned to pull that Daanan power within themselves outward. Iti is the Daanan that sorcerers use rather than the external Solanon power.

Wizard Casting: Casting for wizards is something of a forced action. Using their knowledge of the science of the Anon their movements and words are styled to shift the Solanon in the world around them into the effects they desire. Their movements are quick and stiff. A sudden move and a quick stop. The verbal component to their casting is similar, with hard consonants and strong quick speaking. This is augmented by the wand, staff, or rod, used by the wizards. Wand users favor flicking movements. Staff users master border swings and gestures. Rod users fall somewhere in between.
