Cathan
of the Four Ports of Ubara
Cathan, along with its sister city of Logra , across Ubara's Arm, was founded by the Lakortha at the height of the Republic of Lakorth expansion east. The project was an attempt to bypass the deadly Plashin Range for safer travel into Slavyum. The planners did not take into account Whidel's Wall and its lack of any passes. The two cities fell into obscurity after this failure, until the rise of the United Kingdoms of Novyum. It was during the reign of the United Kingdoms that saw engineers create Undermountain Pass. This opened trade through Whidel's Wall for the first time. The rest is, as they say, history.
The overland route through Undermountain Pass, and across the well protected Ubara's Arm, meant the development of a stable trade network between eastern and western Novyum. Cathan flourished as the hub of this trade route to the Heartlands . The Cathan family, who had ruled over the city since its founding, invested the cities prosperity into its ports and multiple ferry systems to cross the Arm, solidifying the city hold on the network. Because of these early investments, the cities ports accounts for over a quarter of all business and revenue within the city. Even today, with the Novyum Civil War preventing stable trade throughout the north, Cathan, and by extension all of Lechlan remains a protected and prosperous hub of trade.
The Lechish people of Cathan are a friendly, but business-oriented people, when it comes to foreigners. A merchant might be able to walk off a ship and find locals that will by him a drink in the tavern, as they bombard him with questions about his homeland and the happenings outside Lechlan, but he shouldn't expect a chat on the street by anyone. Business is business, and foreign traders bring that business, but they also bring trouble. They sooner they can pass through or sell their goods and return home the better.
