Abellion Orchards

Abellion Orchards is a river valley in the eastern part of the Gloynbyw Coalfields. It is carved by River Bodua, which merges downstream into the River Meld, which empties into a bay by a coastal town called Meld's Mouth.

Directly Northwest of it lays the Threatening valley, which flanks a valley carved by the River ???. To its West and Southwest lays the Golden Medlar Valley, a small river valley carved by the River Paris. To the South is a Market Town and Train Station, Sarn Gwern (Alder's Crossing), which is operated by the Glendatis Morgana people. There is a small Forest Northeast called a 'Koid' that manifests on Choleric Badland, and then East is the Obsidiaz Valley which was purchased by some strange Heno family.

What are your non-earth-like geographical features in your setting?

  • The river which carved the valley, known as River Bodua, is full of coal and is always black. However, this seems to cleanse the soil and earth around it, as if filtering an neutralizing the poison. Thus the rivers are hot spots for planting carboniferous, broadleaf Koids and starting communities.
  • There are many buried towns and possibly even industries here, due to landslides and mining accidents over the ages. Strange things emerge from the coal and petrified soil.

What’s the general “lay of the land” of your active worldbuilding area?

  • Large river valley carved by River Bodua, with misty bogs, carboniferous broadleaf forests, and dry, windswept uplands ravaged by industry and metal contamination.
  • Abellion Orchard's territory ends where the River Bodua merges into the River Meld and becomes the territory of Sarn Gwern.
  • Penaval is a fortified town at the head of the valley, much of which is built over old coal mines and reforestation attempts. It is mainly in the Choleric Badland region though it is bordered by Koids and benefits from the Phelgmatic Bogland at lower elevations, where it acts as an administrator for many orchards
  • Fluria Koid is the name given to the surrounding orchard that spans from Penaval to Whiterose, the second largest settlement in Abellion Orchards, the mayor of which owns the Whiterose Orchards which holds the community cemetery and village green for the other smaller settlements.
  • There are several smaller communities revolving mainly around maintaining orchards, all whom must pay a tithe to the Abellion. They are often run by locals, where as Penaval is run by the ruling elite and Whiterose a mix of both.
  • There is a bit of "no man's land" between Sarn Gwern and the first town which comes under Abellion rulership, Brynmespyll ("medlar hill"). It seems to evoke a mix of Phelgmatic Bogland and Melancholic Heathland, leading to some unstable weather patterns but the Glendatis, who are built for this kind of terrain, leave it as this to prevent the Myacoris from getting too comfortable.

And what is the climate or environment like, in your active worldbuilding area?

  • Mild, wet, cloudy, and windy - this is very much a phelgmatic environment
  • Mild winters and warm summers, though higher altitudes do get colder
  • Weather is unpredictable and it frequently rains
  • Poorly draining soil, particularly around the river due to its charcoal content
  • Anthrax and other bacteria is common elsewhere

Next, What is the ecosystem & habitat like in your active worldbuilding area?

  • Halfwings are common here. They live off of the dense, humid forests and the protected uplands.
  • Gwynwen "white ladies" are the discarded shells of the Locii after molting, and are often used by Vespula or by Citron magicians to animate
  • Myacoris also live here, particularly following Halfwing (and later Vespula) settlements, some remaining nomadic but some settling down
  • A lot of gall orchards here make for a lot of the food output, but sometimes there are strange mutated plankton and other creatures (known as Flesh Oil) get spat up into the river or collect in the water reservoir just outside of Penaval

Finally, what natural resources are found in your active worldbuilding area?

  • The mountains contain the following:
  • Heavy Metals - Tin, Arsenic, Copper, Lead
  • Citron - Gall orchards, magberries, untainted plants
  • Flint - Flint, some quartz
  • Brimstone - Sulphur, Evaporite
  • Brine - Salt, Evaporite
  • Healing water that is effective against heavy metal poisoning
  • Strange and arcane organic remains
