The Story of Augustus Ahab (3rd draft)

by Captain Augustus Ahab

The birth of Augustus is just one of the many signs of the increasing rampant energy that is spreading throughout the world. It used to be that only occasionally, due to the chaotic influence of Aether, non-human races would be born with deformities and mutations. Most occurrences were fatal either before birth or not long after, though not always, a fact that is becoming increasingly common. Mutants that survive past adolescence are known as Ferals, a broad term used to describe them but often an accurate one. Recently, as a result of humans frequent use of Aether, these occurrences are becoming increasingly more common. Being born with Augustus spent his youth treated more like a wild animal by piers, a resentment which eventually led to him joining the White Hand. While most Feral's were often seen as little more than beasts to others of their race, the White Hand mercenaries welcomed them on the same condition they gave all members; members must listen to orders without question. Among the ranks in the group were special subdivisions for those with particular skill sets, such as stealth or gorilla warfare. Augustus was a member of the Carrion, which specialised in salvaging, harvesting or looting everything they could to help resupply the White Hands other forces. Not an especially admirable role, but one he was good at and enjoyed.

Augustus Ahab was once the captain of a company of mercenaries. However, after a deadly encounter with a small kaiju most of his company was killed or severely injured before managing to repel it, Augustus being one of the latter. After recovering from his injuries he was put into command of another company that was tasked with hunting the creature down, unfortunately, this company soon met the same fate as the last, the creature before had returned stronger than before. It was apparent now that the creature possessed some level of intelligence, it seemingly remembered Augustus from the previous encounter as the groups leader, singling him out from the rest and incapacitating him first. Suspiciously, it did not aim to kill him, and despite possessing more strength then previously it retreated after killing most of the other men despite it lacking serious injury itself. Again, after recovering from his injuries Augustus was thrust back into command of a company ordered to kill it. This time, they were almost immediately attacked by the creature, and none but Augustus was found alive. No trail of the beast was left, and it was assumed to have grown too big for the area and moved on. At this point though Captain Ahab was convinced this creature was interested in him for some reason, and while his superiors also saw a connection between the two, they saw it more as a failure that he had allowed the creature to kill his men rather than a deeper reason. Augustus was dishonourably discharged from the line of duty, struck of rank and forced into retirement. For such a militarized and honourbound race as the Hobgoblin, early retirement in such a manner could only mean one of two things: a shameful death by suicide; or an equally shameful life of slavery. The burning desire for revenge against the creature prevented Augustus from taking the cowards way out, so a few years of heavy drinking later, finally crossed a line by getting into a fight with a human before blacking out. When he woke he found himself chained to the hull of a ship, with nothing but scum and the memories of the creature as his new company.
