Recounting

by Desert Song

Tomorrow we set out back to Ebonfyre.

It is the scene of our first meeting, and perhaps in some way it feels right for it to be the place where we begin the next stage of our journey. I must catch you up on all that has happened… Allow me to recount.

Nazriil, primal dragon of shadows, the younger sibling to the great primal dragons of the seasons, seeks to flood the material plane with negative energy and escape from the shadow plane. If he succeeds, the balance of nature will be broken entirely, and the world plunged into eternal night. He has tried this once before, a thousand years ago, but he was stopped. Now he must be stopped again.

To aid him in his goal, he has gathered an army of followers we know as the Shadow Pact. We are not fully aware of the extent of this pact, but we know of two players: the Hellknights in the north, and the Broken Wing, a cultist group currently travelling south through Vestra, the successors to the Circle of Bone.

It was through the Broken Wing that my companions and I became drawn into this plot. We apprehended one of these cultists, a human man called Balmin, who later became our ally, largely through the efforts of Kai, who saw something in him that we did not. At first we sought only to free him and his fellows from the curse that has forced them to become the Broken Wing, and so destroy this cultist group from the inside and remove it from Nazriil’s pact, but our search for answers drew us into something bigger.

Rumours set us on the trail of the tetracore, a powerful artifact and magical conduit, said to have been locked away by the gods themselves somewhere near the centre of the material plane. In our previous travels, we encountered a wizard who appeared to have discovered its likely resting place, though at the time we did not know it. With the power of the tetracore, we hoped not only to break the unbreakable curse, but perhaps even to stand up to Nazriil himself.

Returning to Travendair, we discovered worrying signs that Nazriil’s plans are further along than we hoped, and met up with the wizard Rasmeon, whom we hoped could lead us to the hidden castle that may yet prove to hold the tetracore. We sought it, found it hidden within the borders of Fraywood, and with the combined energy of all four branches of magic, entered this sealed palace of the gods.

It was guarded and trapped, as to be expected, but we were not overwhelmed. We ascended to the second floor, and there we found something that halted us in our tracks. Doors of coloured metal, sealed with magic, able to be opened only with a matching key.

There are nine of them. We only had one. At first it seemed hopeless. In some ways, it still does.

But it seems we have another ally in this I had not considered: a strange man we know only as The Peddler. We met him once, long ago, shortly after I met my companions for the first time, on the road south out of Ebonfyre. He was the one who sold us the key: one of the nine we now need. He foresaw its use. He foresaw we would be the ones to do this.

I suspect he knows more than he lets on, and I don’t yet know why he keeps these secrets from us, but it seems he wishes us to succeed… He claims Kai is our key to finding these eight other keys, which must be scattered across the planes themselves. How exactly, we have yet to find out. But she has a strange magic inside her, magic that seems to stem from the Far Realms themselves… The Peddler has set us on the trail of the Seventh Eye, a secret occultic group in Ebonfyre, who may be able to tell us more.

But he claimed also that our meeting was fate. That Alistair, Kai and I were meant to meet. That we are the only ones who can stand up to Nazriil and stop him before he ruins all.

I’m not sure I believe him yet. Yes, Alistair is meant for great things. He is an Ardeen, and Thundersong only grows stronger in his hands. I believe there is more to him than even he realises. And Kai is tied to this in ways that are only just making themselves clear: her magic, her lost past. She is more than just a little goblin who does not remember. And the strength of mortal wills runs strong in their veins.

But I? I am not so certain. I am a mere nature spirit, called into this body for a purpose already completed. What more could I bring? What more can I be? What greatness could I be meant for?

I fear that fate has made a mistake, if this is true. I cannot be the leshy they were meant to meet. But even so, I will do all in my power to help them succeed. I will not let them fail because of me. I will protect them, no matter what it means. And I will not let Nazriil break this world I love.

We will find these keys. We will save Balmin and the Broken Wing. And we will stop Nazriil. That is our goal.

First, we return to Ebonfyre and seek answers about Kai’s past. And then… To the fire plane. There is another key lost within, or so The Peddler claims. The others we have yet to discover, apart from one deep in Cavendulg, though we are not yet strong enough to seek it. And we must be quick. Nazriil’s plot is already well underway. We do not have time…

Oh yes, and we’re building a home in Travendair, a base of sorts, to return to as we can. Alistair thinks we need one. I have never had a home before…

It might be nice.
