Uvian, God of Commerce (OO-vee-un)

Description

Depicted as an older, yet still handsome dwarf of regal bearing, with long grey hair and beard, and emerald green eyes. He is depicted as wearing the plain leather armor and traveling cloak of roaming merchants and tradesmen, the cloak depicted as swirling in an unseen wind. Only his grey hair, arms, and scimitar are seen, as the cloak covers the rest. He is always depcited midstride; his feet leaving gold-gilt footprints behind him.

Personality

Uvian is known to be cheerful and boisterous, also known as "The Laughing Dwarf",  he seems to be perpetually in good humor. An active and enthustiac deity who enjoys the ebb and flow of goods via commerce and the rapid pace of business in a thriving marketplace full of spirited bargaining. Uvian can be driven to accomplish a goal and move onto the next one, willing to try alternate methods when encountering a roadblock. He can be stubborn and doggedly persistent.   Very few legends exist of Uvian showing his wrath, prefering to quietly curse his enemies with poor business and sudden decline of wealth.

Activity

Uvian promotes commerce and the accumulation of wealth through free and fair trade, as well as the beneficial use of wealth to improve civilization.   On the other side of the coin, Uvian is also the patron of illicit trade, of many smugglers, fences, black marketters, and "businessmen" on the shady side of commerce. Uvian delights in the art of the deal, no matter what it is, so long as it turns a profit.   Uvian is known to have a hands-on approach to his clergy, guiding his priests via dreams and occasionally talks to them as the "voice that shines like gold."

Worshipers, Tenets & Ideals

"The Merchant's Friend" is venerated and appeased by not only merchants, from lowly peddlers to the wealthy owners of trading companies, but investors, accountants, entrepreneurs, caravan guides, warehouse owners, philanthropists, deal-makers, moneylenders, and other such individuals.   Followers typically exhibit some of the following behaviors:
  • Clerics of Uvian are not necessarily expected to be personally wealthy, but should work to ensure their local temple remains filled with treasure.
  • Encourage personal wealth, but only through arms-length investments and never by breaking the law*
  • Pay a tithe equal to 25% of their income to the church, applicable to adventuring loot, investments, bounties, rewards, and businesses.
  • Clergy are often called "Goldpalms" or "Coinspinners"
  • Holy days of Uvian's faith are known as "coin festivals" or "trademeets", marking a period of immense mercantile activity. These typically occur on the days before or after a full moon.
  • Temples and shrines are usually found in centers of commerce across the continent.
  • Uvian's clerics usually travel the trade routes, aiding merchants and caravans; or work in the opulent temples as hosts for wealthy donors, moneylenders, currency exchangers, venture capitalists, warehousers, fences (covertly, of course), and security guards.
  • Invest in any/all business that has a reasonable chance of not failing
  • Any businesses ran by worshipers is expected to offer a hefty tithe to the church.
  • Safe-keep contracts, bills of sale, deeds, wills of merchants and civilians of the local temple's city.
