Callyxtan Mud Cactus
The callyxtan mud cactus is a large cactus species native to the Mudlands of Mars. These cacti can survive up to five hundred years, and grow to ten metres in height.
The bright yellow barrel of the cactus makes a perfect home for numerous nesting bird species. The flaffal dripwing is a small gregarious bird that builds colonies inside a single cactus, laying eggs in a massive cluster in the middle of the hollowed out cactus.
The chambered columns of the callyxtan mud cactus makes them a perfect hiding space from predators. Dripwings nest in the very bottom of the cactus, and predators have to navigate a labyrinth of chambers to reach the eggs. Most give up part way through, if they haven't already been scared off by the loud threatening calls of the birds.
