Ring Shelter
Please take notice of the small shelters positioned at regular intervals along the roads and rail lines here in the Kirinal Concordance Zone. These ring shelters provide a refuge warded against evil spirits. They were built for travelers who find themselves stranded outside the walled protection of cities and fortresses, especially on perilous nights.
I've spent more than a few comfy nights in a ring shelter when out hunting or simply on a walkabout. When I was a rookie zap we used to "roust the rings". We'd check for squatters or the poor shmucks who didn't quite make it on time. Sometimes we'd only find shoes with the feet still in 'em.
In the Kirinal Concordance Zone, even a single hour spent outside the protective wards on certain nights can meand death or worse. On nights of Shadow or Shatter, or when hostile planes Manifest, evil spirits and undead roam freely.
To protect travelers and workers who might not reach shelter before dusk, the Zone Authority and Canton governments constructed a network of ring shelters. These sanctuaries are placed at reliable mile long intervals along the Inner and Outer Ring rail lines as well as all major roads in between.
Each one is fortified with cold iron and warded with simple and effective abjurations. Though the structures are modest, they are packed iwth practical magic: sigils in every beam, circles of salt, garlic, sage, and regularly blessed holy glyphs. On the worst nights, some shelters are even staffed by roving shamans and war-priests.

Locals take it upon themselves to stock the shelters. A traveler might find preserved food, old blankets, or a mojo bag hanging by the door. These small tokens come from those who once depended on the shelter themselves.
Taboos around damaging or desecrating a shelter are strong. Even criminals know better than to disrepect the good spirits and baku who protect these spaces.
As a member of the Heavenly Council of Ki-rins, I am obligated to provide protection for any trapped outside the wards when night falls. They are welcome to stay within my Oak Heart alongside the Myconind Mother. Our little toadstools would welcome the company.
Aw I love this. What a nice thing to have to protect people.
