The Metropolitan Police Service, commonly known as Scotland Yard, serves as the primary law enforcement body for the Greater London area. Established in 1829 by Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel, it has grown into a complex and modernising institution, adapting to the increasing demands of a rapidly industrialising and expanding metropolis.

By the 1890s, Scotland Yard had adopted a divisional structure, with separate departments handling criminal investigations, public order, and specialist services. Among these, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), founded in 1878, leads conventional detective work, while uniformed divisions handle patrol and civil policing.

Founded in 1885 following a series of anomalous crimes and public incidents involving supposed arcane influence, the Occult Felony Bureau was established as a formal division within the Metropolitan Police. Its mandate includes the investigation of felonies involving magical interference, necromantic activity, spiritual unrest, and occult criminality.

Structure

Scotland Yard’s chain of command flows upward to the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, to whom all divisions — including the OFB — ultimately report. However, due to the sensitive and esoteric nature of its operations, the Praetor Occulti, head of the OFB, is granted special administrative discretion, often operating through sealed channels.
