Thonás Elaenda, Garad’a’Besh

Binder of Oaths of Clan Meldarin (573 CY–present)

A veteran pathfinder from the Elaenda (Greenheart) tribe—one of Meldarin’s smaller kin-groups famed for arbormancy and a higher-than-usual number of half-elves—Thonás Elaenda rose from ranger captain to Lon’Törl three decades ago on the strength of fiery speeches calling the clans to reassert stewardship over the Gnarley. In 573 CY he succeeded Gilathadar Telva as Garad’a’Besh (Binder of Oaths) and now walks a careful line between Verbobonc-leaning pragmatists and those urging a renewed alignment with Celene, Faerie Kingdom of.

Appearance & Bearing

Lean, weathered, and unassuming until he moves—then all economy and purpose. Thonás wears bark-dyed leathers and a fern-green cloak, his bow laminated from heartwood cuttings stewarded by Elaenda groves. He speaks softly, saves his edge for council, and carries the moon-touched tokens of his office: a knotworked oath-band and an acorn-seal used to witness accords at the Besh’norin. The Oath Oak’s chamber and guest-lodges are literally inside the living tree at Alaeduril, underscoring his role as arbiter.

History

  • Early Life, Elaenda Groves. Trained among the Greenheart Nurseries, where arbormancers shape living wood and preserve sacred cuttings; Elaenda traditions fit his mixed heritage and practical bent.
  • Wardenship & Ruinwatch. Before office, Thonás served on rotating watches near Ansynor (Runeoak)—a ley-crossing ruined by Ur-Flannae necromancy and still prone to elemental surges and undead flares—experience that forged his urgency about unified action.
  • Rise to Lon’Törl. Elected clan chief thirty years ago after rousing calls for the elves to reassert authority across the forest and guide human and gnomish neighbors toward self-motivated protection of the woods.
  • Binder of Oaths (573 CY–). Took the rotating post of Garad’a’Besh, which breaks council ties, maintains order in the Oath Oak, and may proclaim emergency measures (e.g., naming a Lon’Keryth war-leader) when quorate.

Personality & Ideals

Pragmatic idealist; believes stewardship must be visible and decisive. Thonás is inclusive by conviction and biography—keenly aware that half-elves are seldom advanced so high in Meldarin politics and determined that every tribe’s needs are seen and met. He answers skepticism with footwork, visiting holds across the Dells and the south runs, listening first, binding later.

Politics & Current Agenda (576 CY)

  • Charm Offensive. Tours all nine tribes to keep consensus ahead of crisis—an explicit response to grumbles about his mixed blood and activist stance.
  • Balancing Factions. Mediates between Telva (Dawnpromise) pragmatists who prefer closer ties to Verbobonc and Quenlarue (Meadowstar) advocates for realignment with Celene. His predecessor Gilathadar favors Verbobonc; Quenlarue voices push toward the Fae Kingdom—Thonás keeps both talking.
  • Security Priorities. Sustains heavy watches on Ansynor and coordinates with Gnarley Rangers against cultists and Nulb-based raiders—core duties echoed in the Rangers’ own mission briefs.

Relationships

  • Gilathadar Telva, Lon’Törl (former Binder). Eminence of the Telva diaspora in Verbobonc; a long-time friend of the Viscounty’s house politics and a counterweight to isolationist voices. Thonás inherited both the chair and the delicate city ties Gilathadar cultivated.
  • Venlathyr Quenlarue. Eloquent Sevensong/Meadowstar cleric-ranger arguing for formal alignment with Celene; Thonás keeps debate productive and the coalition intact.
  • Ienre Lafkel, Lon’Baelyth . Chief Guardian overseeing the Ansynor cordon; Thonás backs her remit with resources and fast-track decrees when omens flare.

Religion

Thonás offers prayers to the The Seldarine — The Elven Pantheon, with particular reverence for EEhlonna (Ehlenestra) and Rillifane Rallathil—a Meldarin norm that marries practical woodslore to living-grove piety. As a night hunter he honors Sehanine and carries a moon-etched feather token when sealing oaths after dusk.

Role & Powers of the Garad’a’Besh

  • Function. Breaks ties in the council, upholds decorum in the Besh’norin, and may act decisively with a present majority quorum.
  • Emergency Authority. Can proclaim a Lon’Keryth (war-leader) and direct massed musters in crisis; in peacetime, coordinates through the Lon’Baelyth to maintain patrols and ruin watches.

Adventure Hooks

  • The Quorum at Dusk. A rogue element tries to sabotage a council session so the Binder cannot secure quorum for an emergency decree; Thonás hires the party to guard messengers and retrieve a stolen oath-seal.
  • Mists over Ansynor Cordon - Runeoak Watch. Elemental surges and vampiric mists rise from Ansynor; Thonás authorizes a temporary Lon’Keryth and second the PCs to Ienre’s patrol.
  • Bridle the Low Road. Pirates and cult factors from Nulb exploit the river reach; Thonás needs deniable escorts to interdict contraband without provoking Verbobonc or Dyvers.

Thonás Elaenda, Garad’a’Besh

Half-elf male; Ranger 8

Hit-and-fade archer, expert in camouflage and reading wind through fern and moss—signature Meldarin craft. Prefers dusk operations, fernshade blinds, and staggered whistle-cants borrowed from Sevensong doctrine. His favored ground is the broken understory south of Alaeduril and the Namburil reach; he will not allow cultists to move unseen between Nulb and the deep Dells.

On Clan Meldarin
  • “We are not a single tree but a grove; nine tribes, one canopy, and every oath a root that holds the soil.”
  • “Let our arrows be unseen and our justice unmistakable.”
  • “Meldarin hospitality is not softness; it is confidence that the forest itself stands at our backs.”
On the Viscounty of Verbobonc
  • “I will gladly teach a neighbor to tend a fire before I let him burn a forest for warmth.”
  • “Verbobonc learns quickly when the lessons come from green hands instead of iron gauntlets.”
  • “Give the Viscount clear borders, honest tolls, and safe roads—and insist on the same in return.”
On Dyvers and Trade
  • “Dyvers counts coin; we count seasons—both must balance, or the ledger and the forest fail together.”
  • “Fair trade walks in daylight; smuggling walks by torchlight because it fears what trees remember.”
  • “Let Dyvers wagons pass, but weigh them on the scales of restraint.”
On the Slavers of the Wild Coast
  • “Slavers are the only game we hunt without warning.”
  • “A chain in the marsh is a promise the forest will break.”
  • “If the Wild Coast sends coffles north, then the south road becomes a battlefield, not a market way.”
On Nulb and the Low Road
  • “Nulb is a net cast from the shadows—step careless, and you will call it a village as it drags you under.”
  • “When the Low Road goes quiet, it is not safe—it is listening.”
  • “Close your purse, string your bow, and keep to the crown of the road; the ditches belong to other masters.”
On Banditry and Rising Danger
  • “Bandits grow bold when patrols grow predictable; so we change the song and the hour.”
  • “A single cut sapling tells me more about a raider’s camp than a dozen confessions.”
  • “Merchants who hire steel guard their wagons; merchants who hire woodsmen guard their tomorrows.”
On Authority and Stewardship
  • “Stewardship is the art of making allies of those who do not know they are allies yet.”
  • “I would rather bind a quarrel with an oath than with a grave—oaths feed roots; graves merely feed worms.”
  • “The forest does not ask permission to endure; neither should its guardians.”
On Half-Elven Kin and Inclusion
  • “Bridges do not apologize for spanning rivers; nor do we for spanning blood.”
  • “Judge me by the trails I keep and the oaths I keep, not by the length of my ears.”
  • “Our strength is the welcome that makes cowards uncertain and allies certain.”
On War and the Temple’s Shadow
  • “If the Temple’s servants wish to test the wind, let them do it with fletching in their teeth.”
  • “Ruin is patient; so are we—and we have better aim.”
  • “When evil hides in the understory, sunlight is a tactic; fire is a last resort.”
