Wholstad (Hh-ole-st-add)
An Introduction.
Wholstad is one of the Seven mobile Stitches Cities. Renown for acting as travelling bazaar's, Stitches Cities behave like a strange combination of a Fortress City and a Trade City. Wholstad is no exception.
Wholstad travels along the Northern, North Eastern and Eastern areas of Vallen, visiting many Cities and Towns along the way.
As a home for the Stitches race, it is suitably filled to the brim with many technologies that escape that average mind in their design and purpose.
Demographics
The populace of Wholstad is incredibly varied due to it's government's "Currency is Welcome" Policy. Where they welcome anyone who brings benefit to the city, whether it be by working or by other means.
The 4 core social standings of Wholstad are The Nobles, The Workers, The Merchants and The Outliers. In Stitches society one can become a Noble by one of the following ways: Become Knighted, Become a Battalion Captain, Contribute signifcantly to the city or, demonstrate a keen ability in science.
The major populace groups of Wholstad are, from highest to lowest: Stitches, Tieflings, Dwarves, Humans, Dragon Born and Half Elves.
Government
Wholstad is ruled by a combination of Her Majesty's Royal Crown, The Noble Parliament, The Workers Parties and The Merchant's Alliances.
Each group is ruled and managed by several factions who are vying for power with the group. For example, The Merchant's Alliances is comprised of 18 individual factions which can be further split into 59 Individual Companies, Merchants and Factory Owners. These 18 factions make up The Merchant's Alliances.
The Noble Parliament, The Workers Parties and Merchant's Alliances work within themselves before reaching out to work with the other ruling bodies. These internal conflicts are called "The Intercom" for the Workers Parties and Merchant's Alliances but is called "The Hearings" for the Noble Parliament. When reaching out to work with the other ruling bodies, this is officially called "The Revalations of Goverment." it is however, called "The Apokálypsi" (Pronouced "The Apocalypse") by all groups in question.
"The Revalations of Goverment." or "The Apokálypsi", is a Mounthly Govermental "Parley and Discussion" or as it is better known "A Fight proceeded by a Yelling Match". The Noble Parliament, The Workers Parties and Merchant's Alliances "Discussion" is moderated by The Royals, who infamously enjoy the meetings and since the invention of The Radio have had it broadcasted throughout the city.
At the end of the day The Royals have final say on any laws created by the other groups, often acting as a quality stamp.
Defences
The Undercannon's
Beneath Wholstad sit Hundreds of cannons. All of these cannons point at the ground, providing an offensive option and defensive option if the city is ever assaulted.
The Leadcoat Millitary
Patroll the area around the city and follow closely in it's wake when it moves, capable of spotting and alerting the city of any potential enemies. They also screen incommer's to the city.
City Walls and Hieght
When moving, Wholstad stands at aproximately 100 meters above the ground. The Cities wall's stand at 40 meters tall and are made of steel and other metals.
Industry & Trade
Stitches are known for their trade and industry, taking goods and refining them to a level only rivaled by Dwarves and Elves.
The Primary material goods Stitches make are Glass, Steel and Rubber.
Stitches are also well known for their production of Duct-Tape, Clocks and Mechnical Devices (such as lighters and radio's). Duct-Tape is a particularly famous export, sold to almost all craftsmen as a helpful (but temporary) tool.
Among the Stitches Cities, Wholstad is best known for it's Glass, Clocks and Flower Production.
Many groups visit Wholstad to Trade and Sell goods with both The City and one another. The city gets a fair bit of tax revenue from this.
The Majority of Trade in the city is from and among outsiders. Stitches commonly purchasing large amounts of goods from settlements they visit and selling them for 4 times the price to other traders elsewhere.
Infrastructure
Wholstad is a large mobile city built in a gothic-industrial style.
Wholstad has all the trappings of a standard city of it's size that would have been built in early 1900's or late 1800's Europe.
Plant life lines the streets and gutters, upending peices of road and displacing the position of alleys. In certain area's of the city however, the plant life can range from "barely being held back" to "pruned to cubes".
Districts
The High District
The district occupied by Wholstad's Nobles, Rich and Royals. Significantly cleaner than the other districts with much more orderly plant life. The quality of it's streets and everything that comes with it is significantly higher than the rest of the city.
Waystone District
The Old High District. In generations past this area was home to long bloodlined families and individual of great important, however; after the flooding of The Run-off District (located just down hill of Waystone District,) most of the less destitute residents slowly moved away to the current High district. Waystone district is currently home to many a venerable estate half maintained by their ancestral families and the few vagrants who manage to slip through the security hired to guard said estates.
The Workers District
This disctrict is comprised of the many, many appartments and homes of Wholstad's Middle Class. It's a little crowded but, it's where most people call home.
The Lead District
One of Wholstad's most famous qualities is it's Military, This is where MIllitary lives. The Lead district is occupied by the many millitary when of Wholstad when on service, it also houses their weapons, vehicles, equipment and supplies.
The Flooded District (Formerly "The Run-off District"
Previously this District was designed to collect the runoff rainwater of Wholstad. Sadly in early 1899 most of the drains of this district became clogged, resulting in extereme flooding the following spring. Over 70 years later and the issue still hasn't been fixed. This district is currently home to Wholstad's poorest who have made a life out on their slowly draining swamp.
Central Stone
One of the two plaza districts in Wholstad, this district is designed for heavy footprints and heavier traffice. Located in the lower portions of Wholstad, It's mostly comprised of small Workplaces, Streets and Pubs all for the hard-working, common Stitches.
Memorial Square
The second plaza of Wholstad, designed for carts, horses and certainly not feet; this district is the main thoroughfair for the wealthy and those who serve them. Filled with Cafe's, avenue gardens and hotels, this is certainly the nicest place for any visitor to stay.
Fun fact: This district contains the most Police Stations in the entirety of Wholstad.
The Spire Chappels
Considered the Holy District of Wholstad, the Spire Chappels main landmark is Finkstone Chappel known for it's titular spires that can be distinguished from all around the city due to thier height and distinct shape, resulting in the districts current name. This district is filled with places of worship and small homes for the visiting faithfull. The District used to be officially titled "Finkstone Chappel" before a petition (and poll) to change the name was made.
Dunwell Market
Contrary to it's cousin Headstone Market, Dunwell Market is comprised of several large city blocks. The streets are lined with stalls and shoppers, the buildings house the wealthier stores who can afford to rent the position. Dunwell market is the market visited by the common man, filled with affordable and usefull goods. A great place to buy what an adventurer needs.
Headstone Market
Contrary to it's cousin Dunwell Market, Headstone Market is a small series of city blocks. The shops have elaborate window displays and pricetags are frequently not shown, because "If you had to ask you probably can't afford it". Filled with overpriced specialties, too many dress shops and several money furnaces for the rich mans needs.
Anklegator Park
What once used to be a strange barren dirt field, this district is now the largest park in Wholstad, so large that it's now considered it's own district. Filled with plants from The Gnarled Wilds and water works, visitors often report this area appearing more like a jungle than a park in certain parts. A well known past time of Wholstad's citizens is visiting Anklegator Park for it's sheer beauty.
The Bowels
Benath Wholstad lies this District, the largest and possibly most important district in the entire city. Underneath each district lies The Bowels, for it is the cities engine and forge. Very few explore of the beaten path in this area, leaving it mostly unknown and mysterious. Due to it's nature beneath the streets, it's darker than the night and crampt like a cave. Maintenance in this area is a constant, with new issue's appearing all the time.
The Krag Dump (Formerly "The Brushers Warf")
Formerly known as "The Brushers Warf' this district was home to many warehouses, factory's and businesses. Sadly 3 years ago an abandonned warehouse in the district that was thought to be empty, was filled with undisposed of Krag, a substance known for it's biohazardus properties that was thought to have been destroyed. This Krag detonated due to a variety of factors and resulted in the district being flooded. clean up is a slow process.
Guilds and Factions
Wholstad has many factions, most of them hate each other.
Political groups
The Workers Parties
A collection of several Unions and activist parties. The largest group in their fold is The Guts Forger's Union. Frequently engaging in psychological and physical warfare with Factory owner's and the "Pinkies".
The Noble Parliament
Comprised of the City's Lord's and Ladies. The Ladies are granted 1 whole vote while The Lords are granted 1 half vote. This is due to general the consensus among Stitches that the Males of their species do not hold the capacity to think about more than one thing at a time or an actions consequences. 6 factions vie for power in this faction.
The Merchant's Alliances
The Merchant's Alliances is comprised of 18 individual factions which can be further split into 59 Individual Companies, Merchants and Factory Owners. These 18 factions make up The Merchant's Alliances. This faction is infamously terrible at cooperation. To be inside this faction one merely needs to meet a specific level of tax cost on their goods.
The Royal Crown
Thought of as the Flippant Ruler's of Wholstad, The Royal Crown is a group that while it truly does have the best intentions for the cities people; rarely show much aptitude for sudden change or politics.
Militant Groups
Leadcoat Military
The Official Military of Wholstad, this group presides over and occupies the inside Wholstad's City Wall's, commonly performing maintenance on various area's of the city. Deploys units to scout ahead of the city and monitor the surrounding area. Fun Fact: Half of the permanent staff of the Leadcoat Military are Engineers and Mechanics.
Wholstad United Police Service (WUPS) or "Red Coats".
A smaller but arguably more significant branch of the Leadcoat's, the Wholstad United Police Service maintain the peace within the city itself, rather than outside of it. A vigilant faction that attempts to maintain order and standards in the city, they try. Easily Identified by their red millitary coats and distinct hats.
"Pinkies" or Ochreurche's Municipal Security Service.
An outside Mercenary force hired by factory owners to disperce strikes and assault unions. Disliked greatly by all factions except The Merchant's Alliances. Known for their uniform which consists of bright pink Homburg hats for all their members and bright pink cloaks for the officers.
Religious Groups
The Church Of Light (Wholstad Sect.)
Wholstad's Primary Religious group, The Church Of Light is worshipped by a whopping %43.68 of the city's populace. Is frequently forced to act as a mediator between various groups. Maintains a neutral status in the city, welcoming all into it's arms.
History
Appeared abruptly along with the 6 other mobile cities 300 years ago.
Participated in The Great Continental War after being provoked.
Climate
Frequently warm and slightly humid.
