Suidae

(Soo · uh · dai) "Swine"  
Suidae is a family of hooved mammals. Pigs, hogs and wild boar general fill this family.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Short necks hold up large heads with relatively small eyes. Their snouts end with a distinctive disc-shaped nose. Suids' coats are generally bristly, and have short tasseled tails. Most sport tusks of various sizes that are mainly used for foraging and/or combat. Even numbered hooves end their generally thin legs.

Genetics and Reproduction

Most species are known to be able to breed at young ages, and have large litters at a time.

Ecology and Habitats

Very adaptable. Most prefer forests, and cooler climates. However, some are known to take up homes in hot savannas and freezing tundra.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Most are omnivorous. Mainly eating roots, grasses, shrubs, fallen fruits, etc. Yet, most are willing to scavenge meat, eggs, or smaller fauna if available.
