Playing in Toriel

Classes

There are a total of 13 official classes, all of which are allowed:
  • Artificer
  • Barbarian
  • Bard
  • Cleric
  • Druid
  • Fighter
  • Monk
  • Paladin
  • Ranger
  • Rogue
  • Sorcerer
  • Warlock
  • Wizard
  • The following 3rd-party classes are also available:
  • Blood Hunter
  • Gunslinger
  • Illriger
  • Monster Hunter
  • Non-official classes are usually more complex, aimed at players with more experience who want new options.

    Species

All the species listed here are available to play in Toriel:

    Rules

    Specific rules

    Encumbrance

I use variant encumbrance, as it encourages players to manage their inventory.

    Hit points

    Hit points are fixed.

    Ability score

Roll 4d6, drop the lowest, and repeat six times. Distribute scores as you wish.   If you dislike your rolls, you may use point buy instead.

    2014 and 2024 rules

Both the 2014 and 2024 rules are allowed. If an option exists in both versions, use the newest one. I will also run the game using the newest rules.
    2014 rules
  • You may use Tasha’s optional features and species customization.
  • You may take a starting feat if your background does not provide one. This feat must not include an Ability Score Improvement (ASI).
  • House rules

    General rules

  • Dropping to 0 HP gives you one level of exhaustion.
  • Short rests take 10 minutes instead of 1 hour.
  • Attunement takes 10 minutes instead of 1 hour, unless a specific place or ritual is required.
  • Drinking a potion or using an item takes an action, unless stated otherwise.
  • Harvesting and crafting

For harvesting monsters or crafting magic items, I use the rules from Heliana’s Guide to Monsters:
  • Harvest rules
  • Craft rules
  • I apply one small change: essence crafting ranks are downgraded by one (e.g. a Potent Essence crafts a Rare item instead of a Very Rare one).

    Buying magical items

I’ve compiled a list of magical items, including homebrew ones, with prices and crafting components where available:
  • item price sheet
  • PS:
    1. Feedback on missing crafting components is welcome.
    2. Feedback on items listed in the “Tri” section (no set price yet) is also welcome.

    Transformation

Players can pursue transformations into monsters such as werewolves, devils, or liches. I use the rules from Grim Hollow:
  • Transformation rules
  • Supported transformations:
  • Aberrant Horror
  • Devil
  • Fey
  • Hag
  • Lich
  • Lycanthrope
  • Medusa
  • Ooze
  • Primordial
  • Seraph
  • Shadowsteel Ghoul
  • Specter
  • DNDBeyond

I use DNDBeyond for character management. Keeping your character there makes it easier for me to track progression.   I have a subscription that lets me share the books I own in my campaign. This gives you access to most official and non-official books, along with my homebrew content.   If you want a 2014 subclass ported to a 2024 class and it hasn’t been done yet, ask me — I’ll adapt it for you.
