Firbolg

Names

Firbolg adopt elven names when they must deal with outsiders, although the concept of names strikes them as strange. They know the animals and plants of the forest without formal names, and instead identify the forest’s children by their deeds, habits, and other actions.   By the same token, their tribe names merely refer to their homes. When dealing with other races, firbolgs refer to their lands by whatever name the surrounding folk use, as a matter of tact and hospitality, but among their own kind they simply call it “home.”   Sometimes firbolgs adopt the nicknames or titles outsiders give them under the assumption that those who need names can call them whatever they wish.  

History

Firbolgs have oral traditions that say they have ancient origins. The firbolgs were convinced by a red dragon to join an alliance during the War of the Ancients, against the demonic invasion. It was ultimately successful, and formed the foundation for much of the familiarity and peace between the elves and later firbolg generations, though they preferred to live in peaceful isolation.   After the Great Extinction, the firbolg connection to giant-kind made them public enemies of the survivors. Their forests were corrupted by the war, and many firbolg tribes went completely mad. The elves severed all ties with the firbolg, refusing them exile in the Feywild.   Currently, the surviving firbolg tribes have been banned to the Giant Island alongside the rest of giant-kind.
