A world brimming with primal energy and chaos was discovered by formless gods. They saw this world as an opportunity to define themselves through creation, and thus they shaped the first races:
Dragons and
Giants were brought forth to inhabit the Prime Material Plane.
Vampires were forged to dwell within the Shadowfell.
The seed of the first tree, the World Tree, was planted in the
Feywild, giving birth to the Faeris.
These first species, created in the gods’ own image, began to shape the world and its echoes. Despite their immortality, their lives were steeped in violence, betrayal, and endless conflict. Seeking to ease their creations' suffering, the gods bestowed fragments of their divine essence upon them, giving rise to the first divine
Magic.
This new power disrupted the balance of the world, awakening the wrath of the
Primordial forces. In response, colossal primordial titans rose to destroy the gods’ creations, unleashing cataclysmic devastation upon the world.
This conflict created a rift among the gods:
The Ancient Gods sought to protect their creations and bring balance to the world. They introduced mortal species—beings with short lives—to counterbalance the immortality of the first races and to fight alongside them.
The Despairing Gods, overcome with grief, wished to join the primordials in annihilating their creations, hoping to abandon the world and start anew elsewhere.
The Ancient Gods triumphed, banishing the Despairing Gods to isolated prison planes, thus creating the first
Outer Planes. Together, mortals and the first species defeated the primordials. The essence of these primordial beings fractured into the elemental planes, where they were reborn as elder elementals—now known as the Princes of the Apocalypse. The Ancient Gods retreated to their newly formed Outer Planes, where they could observe and influence the world from afar.
With the titans defeated, mortal species flourished, and countless other races emerged—some as deliberate creations of the gods, others as spontaneous changes in the evolving world. However, peace was fleeting. A mortal
Elf,
Corellon Loth, unwittingly tampering with forbidden knowledge, released demons from the
Abyss, one of the prison planes. The
Demons wrought devastation across the planes, forcing the gods to intervene.
This event sparked the
War of the Ancients, a catastrophic conflict where gods and mortals alike created powerful engines of war. Legendary items imbued with divine power, known as Divine Artifacts, were forged in this era. The war ended with the demons banished back to the Abyss, but at a terrible cost—civilizations lay in ruin, and the scars of this war linger to this day.
For millennia after the War of the Ancients, mortals rebuilt, creating magnificent magical cities and advancing their civilizations. But mortal greed remained unyielding. One emperor, in pursuit of eternal life to preserve a lost love, tampered with forbidden magics, resulting in a cataclysmic event known as the
Great Extinction. This disaster obliterated the majority of life on the Material Plane, leaving it a desolate wasteland.
In the void left by the great extinction, the most powerful beings resurfaced, vying for dominance. The dragons and giants, ancient rivals, waged a war so destructive that it led to their near-total annihilation.
Now, the gods watch as mortals, after a millennium of rebuilding, have begun to forge new empires and kingdoms. The echoes of past mistakes still linger in their history. The question remains: will they succumb to the errors of their ancestors, or will they learn from the scars of the past and forge a better future?
