Characteristics
Physical features
Merithra draconic form is green, like her mother, her skin resembling an emerald, smooth and partially transparent. Her physical form is ghostly, ethereal, like watching a living dream or vision. She prefers her realm of dream, a place where all living beings go when dreaming. It is a place where sentient beings have dreams of hope, and faith for a better tomorrow.
There are only a few recorded moments in history where Merithra has opened her eyes since she became a goddess. When she does, a person can see the eyes of many colors, like a rainbow. The eyes of every sentient creature can be seen at once through her eyes.
Abilities
From this realm, Merithra can observe all lesser races. Her eyes are always closed, although you can see her pupils move constantly below her eyelids as if watching many dreams at once.
Merithra can assume the form she wishes, but rarely bother to shapeshift or visit the mortals in person. Instead, she travels from mind to mind, going anywhere she wishes by entering the dreams of any living being sleeping. She may enter the dreams of a target to communicate with or warn the sleeping creature. Merithra has the ability to planeshift between the material plane, and the plane of Dream.
History
The emerald dragon Merithra is the daughter of Ysera, the goddess of nature. Born a demigod, Merithra carried the weight of divinity in her very being, yet she struggled to find her place. Growing up in her mother’s shadow and constantly compared to her, Merithra felt alienated among other dragons. Despite the divine power coursing through her, she rejected it, yearning to forge her own path. To escape her lineage, she often took on various guises—men, women, even foxes—to walk the Material Plane alongside her close friend Caelestrasz, the son of
Alexstrasza, who faced similar struggles with his identity. Merithra sought recognition for her deeds rather than her parentage.
Though she distanced herself from her heritage, Merithra could not sever her bond with nature. She possessed an innate ability to commune with plants and trees, but during an encounter with an enemy, she discovered her powers extended beyond the natural world. Focusing on the fleeing spirit of her defeated foe, she unlocked the ability to delve into memories and read minds. This revelation spurred her to develop her abilities further, eventually mastering the art of influencing others through visions and dreams.
Living through the stolen memories of countless foes, Merithra was haunted by a recurring vision of a seed. Driven by this mystery, she parted ways with Caelestrasz to pursue the vision, which led her to the
Cave of echoes, where cultists of the
Blossom brotherhood were attempting to harness the seed’s power to open a planar rift. The ritual aimed to allow
Zyra's Thorn to seize the seed, unleashing a cascade of thorns to consume the world. Merithra managed to disrupt the ritual and defeat the cultists but was ultimately overpowered when she refused to revert to her draconic form. At this moment, a group called
The Seekers intervened, saving her.
Merithra seized the seed and fled as The Seekers held off the cultists. Upon touching the seed, she experienced another vision, this time of a green-clad, elven-like woman surrounded by others of her kind. Compelled to find her, Merithra sought guidance from The Seekers, who, though initially wary, decided to trust her. They directed her to the Woods of the Vales, suggesting that the woman from her vision might be a dryad.
In the
Wood of the Vale, Merithra encountered a dryad resembling the woman from her vision. This was
Eithne Flosthùl, leader of the
Sisters of the Vale. Recognizing Merithra’s importance, Eithne welcomed her warmly. The seed, Eithne explained, was a fragment of the
World Tree from the Feywild, which needed to be returned to its origin. Merithra confided her struggles to Eithne, admitting that she was lost, unsure of her identity or purpose.
Eithne became a mentor and second mother to Merithra, teaching her the beauty of change and the fluidity of identity. Under Eithne's guidance, Merithra learned druidic traditions and compassion for nature, mastering her abilities while embracing the idea that she could be as adaptable as the seasons.
After years of study, Merithra journeyed to the Feywild to return the seed. Welcomed by the
Summer Court, she was escorted to the World Tree Wood, where she presented the seed during a grand ceremony. The World Tree absorbed the seed, and in return, Merithra received a boon of protection, granting her the freedom to never be bound to a single form.
Reunited with Caelestrasz, Merithra shared her experiences, and the two decided to journey together once more. However, during the Draco-Giant War, both dragons were captured by giants. The giants attempted to curse them into their humanoid disguises, but the boon of the World Tree shielded Merithra. Frustrated, the giants placed her under a curse of eternal slumber. Yet even in her dreams, Merithra reached into the minds of the giants, gaining valuable knowledge.
The plight of the captured dragons, especially Merithra and Caelestrasz, galvanized their families. Ysera, who had refrained from the war, called upon the dragonflights, rallying them to action. The intervention of the dragon gods turned the tide of the war.
While cursed, Merithra was contacted in her dreams by Kueli, a close friend of Ysera, who taught her the secrets of sleep and dream magic. These lessons became instrumental in Merithra's eventual ascension to godhood, though they took a toll on Kueli, who fell into a deep slumber for centuries. Merithra, deeply grateful, watched over Kueli, weaving dreams of peace and joy for her mentor.
Through years of honing her powers and dwelling in the dreams of the world, Merithra awakened a fragment of divinity within herself. Her dreams began to encompass all of existence, and her mastery of memories and minds transcended mortal understanding. Finally, Merithra ascended, becoming the goddess of dreams, transformation, and freedom.
