Green V

Cold planet of the Green System, with a large number of pits that can make navigation difficult.

Green V's pits (valleys and mountains) can vary significantly, with some being only several meters deep but others can span many kilometers in height. There is no water on the planet, but there is a measure of ice. The surface temperature is less than 0°C. Green V is one of the least habitable planets in the system but despite that still holds immense interest to the Hyperion Federation. The planet has no moons, and the atmosphere captures relatively little light, making it very dark during night.

A sinister but faint green glow is noticeable from under the ice. It lights up the world ever so slightly at night, providing a guide to any creatures that can see this green light. The glow is significantly less visible during day. Of course, the source of the glow is unknown and there are significant efforts to try and find out about this phenomenon. Despite this, when viewed from space the planet takes up a mostly blue shade of colour in almost every location visible from space. The green glow is only really noticeable when viewing the night side when there are no clouds or other effects obstructing the view.

Some tourists like to visit the world despite the cold, sometimes to 'spook' them out for fun. Green V can be very dark as virtually no sunlight ever reaches the night side, and its spooky scenery which is eerily empty despite the pits. As such, there are a number of smaller settlements on the planet in many locations. Relatively few tourists come to Green V compared to the other planets in this star system. Fewer resources have been invested on this planet by the HF, too, so the colonies are less numerous and further apart...

Green V has a decent measure of rare metals within its crust, as well as a lower relative wealth of common metals. The very low temperature and empty nature of the world can make it fairly easy to mine as the mining stations would not need to take into account geological shift with this planets almost completely frozen core. This makes it safer to mine despite the very cold environment. Any material mined on Green V is converted into matter plasma for the HF to use in Replicators as a resource to build objects.

The core is almost entirely frozen over. It could be extracted for valuable materials, but this has not been done as Green V is too valuable scientifically to the HF, or might be in the future anyway. Despite the mining, the sources of the green lights have not been found.
