Mechanus
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Mechanus is not a city of laws so much as the law of cities, the engine that lets vows hold, scales weigh true, timetables mean anything at all. Picture an infinite volume tessellated by continent-sized cogs, each face habitable, every tooth meshing with neighbor wheels in measured grace. Between the gears, a clear, breath-easy firmament hums with a comforting click: the sound of consequences finding their causes.
Devils litigate here, Archonsreference here, inevitables are minted here, and even gods defer when the gears answer, Thus.
Laws
Premise
Declare your intent; undeclared actions fail politely (doors don’t open, rails don’t light).Timestamps
A time named is a time kept (by the plane’s clocks, not yours).Custody
Evidence and persons properly seized remain seized until scheduled release.Adjacency
Transit must respect adjacency; teleportation into secured zones reroutes to the nearest legal threshold.Witness
Proceedings are recorded; to erase a record requires a counter-record (and two witnesses).Non-Contradiction
You may not obligate yourself to mutually exclusive acts; the first accepted clause stands, the rest void.Restitution
Debt is weight; make whole, and the world becomes light again.Jurisdiction
Each cog honors the filed charter of its steward, but the Manifold’s cadence prevails in conflicts.Right-of-Way
Certified couriers have passage precedence; even inevitables yield on a valid seal.Grace
First offense earns procedural mercy; second earns sanction.Silence
Contempt of process is a kind of noise, quieted swiftly by the nearest zelekhut.Geography
Notable Locations
The Measure-Rails
Mirror-straight boulevards inlaid with fine glyphwork. Some rails only accept traffic at scheduled intervals; miss your slot, and the path cools under your feet, unwelcoming as a shut book.Logic-Canals
Still, ink-black waterways that ferry sealed writs and courier-boats. Their surfaces ripple when a contradiction passes nearby.Proof-Towers
Needle spires that ring when a theorem, or a law code, reconciles cleanly. Districts subtly re-lay themselves to match the accepted proof.Interval Gears
When two major cogs would collide, a thin emergency wheel births between them to preserve cadence, then sublimates when the schedule clears. The Gear-Sky
Breathable, luminous air between wheels, home to mooring pylons, sky-docks, and clockwork aviaries. At noon the light flattens—shadows become rulers.Compliance Fields
Zones (courts, archives, sanctioned factories) where randomness dampens and the least disruptive outcome is preferred by reality itself.Archivum of Prime Concords
Triple-sealed vault of the Pact copy and other world-binding instruments. Reading rooms so quiet you can hear a lie try to leave your mouth. The Tribunal of Nine Measures
Tiered forum where jurisprudential engines, Probity, Equity, Causality, Custody, Concord, Remedy, Record, Jurisdiction, and Silence, render decisions.Measure-Forges
Foundries where Inevitablesare cast and sworn; visitors with clean ledgers can commission a single-use lawful seal. The Clock of Aeons
A horizon orrery of accepted timelines. Petitioners promoted to hands become living minute-marks on history.Tintibuline Bridge
Lawful sky-ferry to Tintibulus that opens on the tick; missed crossings become parables for apprentices.Automata Conduit
Sanctioned Outlands gate; which spur you arrive on depends on your paperwork.Docket Row
A market of scriveners, seal-makers, and contract-smiths; the jokes are dry and devastating.Travel and Access
Most visitors come by the Gate of Automata in the Outlands, where the first lesson of Mechanus is taught politely: say what you mean. A clerk of brass and parchment asks for an Intent Declaration, one page naming your purpose, the path you intend, and how long you’ll need. When the words ring true, the gate stamps itself upon you and you arrive on the proper spur: the public concourse, the contractors’ yard, or, if your business is already in dispute, the auditor’s portico. Those who lie find their speech grows heavy with blue glyphs; the gears do not punish immediately, but they do remember. Other, stricter doors exist. The Tintibuline Bridge ferries engineer-companies and ore-barges between Mechanus and Acheron’s regimented stone; Celestia’s courier lane and Nessus’s archive route accept only sealed messengers and tribunal envoys. You may force the matter with raw magic, but on Mechanus the Adjacency Law holds: any spell that would deposit you inside a vault, court, or foundry politely sets you down at its front desk instead. The machine hates trespass less than it loves procedure. Exiting Mechanus is as formal as entering. You close your docket at the gate kiosk; fines unpaid become a Restitution Markת not a curse, only a courteous notice to other lawful realms that you owe a little mending. Extradition is a matter of parity: if your homeland keeps a process like Mechanus’s, you may be recalled after a hearing; asylum is granted to those punished without one.Inhabitants
Axiomites and Apkallus
The architects and the archivist-sages; the latter appear only when precedent itself needs defense.Inevitables
Maruts (mortality enforcement), kolyaruts (oaths), zelekhuts (sentences), lhaksharuts (extraplanar boundaries) patrol boulevards and borders.Aeons
Increasingly common, serving as balance auditors; their silence in court says as much as their words.Mercanes
Native traders now, masters of bonded warehouses that span cogs.Clockworks and Automatons
Brigh-blessed prototypes, and municipal servitors.Petitioners of Order
Remade mortals engraved with duty-script; tireless clerks, engineers, magistrates.Localized Phenomena
A plane of Law and order, Nirvana has equal amounts of light and dark, heat and cold, and equal measures of the four elements. There is a place for everything and everything was in its place. Even individuals living here exist to fit into the greater scheme of things and thus achieve a perfect society. There is no pain, but the only pleasure is in successfully filling a role like a gear in a machine. Passion, fantasy, and illusion do not exist here, except for what might be brought in by visitors, and any who tries to foment individualism or stir passions for a cause soon found they were not well received.
Trait Type |
Description |
|---|---|
| Gravity | Normal toward each cog’s face. In the interstitial “gear-sky” between wheels, there is no gravity (creatures drift until they enter a cog’s gravity sphere). |
| Time | Normal but tick-regular. |
| Shape & Size | Infinite planar volume populated by a countably infinite set of interlocking cogs (each gear typically 1,000+ miles across). Each cog’s habitable faces are finite; the manifold as a whole is unbounded. |
| Morphic Traits | Lawfully morphic. Recognized authorities (Primus, axiomites acting on filed mandate, primal inevitables, sanctioned magistrates of allied faiths) may petition to re-index local machinery; others treat terrain as static. |
| Elemental Energy | None Dominant |
| Alignment | Lawful Neutral. |
| Magic | Calm emotions, comprehend languages, detect thoughts (truth-seeking), discern lies, geas/quest (consensual or court-ordered), mark of justice, status, zone of truth, effects that reveal structure such as find traps, analyze dweomer, are enhanced. While Chaos hammer, entropic shield, shadow conjuration/evocation, and compulsions that erode duties (suggestion to abandon a watch, mass charm) are impeded. |
