Deepshaft Hall
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Deepshaft Hall lies past a vault-lined halls and whispering corriders in the Deep beneath the Dwarvish Mountain, the most sacred and secretive delve under Dumathoin’s stewardship. This ancient mining complex descends into the cold, unlit bones of the Outlands, a place not just of stone and steel, but of spiritual resonance and ancestral memory.
Geography
The descent into Deepshaft is a journey into both depth and silence. The tunnels are vast, branching like veins of ore into a labyrinth of worked stone, crude mine shafts, and echoing chambers. Air grows thin and metallic the deeper one travels as it is laced with frost, iron dust, and the solemn breath of generations who have labored here.
Lanterns and runed sconces are placed sparingly, leaving most of the halls in deep shadow. Faint chants drift through the dark, dwarven voices murmuring ancient work-hymns as they mine, smith, and commune with the stone. The rhythmic clang of pick to ore and the occasional ring of dwarven bell-hammers form a haunting liturgy of toil.
The deeper tunnels are notoriously treacherous. Passages twist in unnatural geometries, confusing the senses. It is whispered that some paths were carved not by dwarves, but by stranger minds. Beyond the last torch lies the Undelved Verge, where the halls begin to brush the psychic residue of Ilsensine, the mind tyrant of the illithids. Unwelcome thoughts and visions plague those who linger near the intersecting realms.
Inhabitants
To outsiders, Deepshaft might seem a mere mine, but to the petitioners who dwell within, it is a sacred rite. Each uncut gem, each raw ingot of ore drawn from the mountain is not merely material: it is an offering to Dumathoin and a reflection of the soul of the laborer who freed it. Gems and metals are not wealth here; they are symbols of spiritual fulfillment. There is one distinct ritual here, called Ritual Mining: which petitioners carve with prayer on their lips. To disturb a gemstone without ritual permission is to desecrate a soul-in-progress. Though much of the ore and stone unearthed in Deepshaft is sent upward to Soot hall, a portion is carted to Ironridge, the surface town near the mountain’s entrance. There it is exchanged for rare foodstuffs, scrolls, and luxury goods. The trade is solemn and controlled as each shipment is seen as both material and devotional.Trait Type |
