Dragonthorn

ragonthorns are extremely advanced magick users who contain inner dragons while appearing as a human. Their magick can take the form of a dragon when revealing them, but otherwise, they seem like the average human wrapped with an ethereal air about them. There are legends about the dragonthorns that are actually descendants from dragons, but that has yet to be proven as dragons were once thought of as mythical beings. And similar to dragons, all dragonthorns have mates, but the only one they have never been paired with is a werewolf.

Basic Information

Anatomy

by Amelia Nite
Dragonthorns are bipedal beings with strong humanoid features, such as two arms. They are often very tall with strong, dense bones and muscular frames. There are two extra organs in a dragonthorn's body, causing some of their internal organs to be smaller in comparison, and even shift around the organ arrangement within the body.
The first organ is known as the nucleus vesicle, which forms when the dragonthorn child is around fifty years of age. The process often causes the child's magick to be out of control, with magickal outbursts happening at any given point -- though most cases are said to be recorded while the child is asleep. The nucleus vesicle is an organ gland attached to the heart of a dragonthorn and grants them access to their dragon magick.
However, dragon magick is dangerous to use for a human, causing their body to grow another organ, a detox sac named the purgatio sac. As its name suggests, the sac filters out the harmful toxins dragon magick secretes into the body of the dragonthorn.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dragonthorns don't procreate with just anyone. They have mates, whom they are loyal to. A female mated to a dragonthorn (whether they are a dragonthorn themself, or another species, like a runi) will go into their first heat once they meet their mate; this heat lasts up to one week, unless the female becomes pregnant. After impregnation, the gestation period takes five months, during which a dragon egg is forming in the womb. In the olden days, the women were forced to push out the egg, but that caused many deaths and a decline in dragonthorn. Nowadays, dragonthorns undergo a cesarean section (c-section for short) to birth the egg. This has been proven to be safe and the most effective way to keep the mothers alive so that they can have more children if they wish to do so.

After the birth, the dragon egg is placed into an incubator set to a high temperature (300 °F or higher), or kept warm near a sunlamp for the next twelve months, where the embryo inside can be shown growing into the dragonthorn child. The egg can only be away from the incubator or sunlamp for approximately thirty minutes before it begins to cool.   A dragonthorn with a runi mate that happens to have a non-egg child can give birth naturally. This is a rare case, but has been happening more and more as the centuries go on. These children are said to never gain dragonthorn traits and have access to any form of magick, thus making them a runi.

Growth Rate & Stages

There are three stages to a dragonthorn's development. As a newborn, the dragonthorn is called a dragonnestling, which remains the term until the child is 300 years old. From the age of 300 - 1,600 years old, the child is referred to as a dragonling. After they turn 1,600 years old, they are officially seen as adults and can be treated as such. However, they are unable to find their mate until they reach 1,800 years old as they are not fully mature.

Biological Cycle

During icehold, dragonthorns become restless, looking for a place to build a nest and hibernate. To combat this, scientists created sunlamps with crystals filled with sun magick from the runi. These pieces of technology come in a variety of sizes, but the most popular is the side of a chandelier and it radiates heat up to 300 feet away. Portable versions have been made in the past 100 years to help with dragonthorns working outside.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Dragonthorns are highly intelligent. They were the first species of Iolen to begin using science to harness things around them. Over the centuries, they have improved their findings, and advanced where no one has before. From airships to submarines, the dragonthorns have pushed the boundaries of physics and nature.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They are born with keen senses, like night vision and a strong sense of smell. Their eyes can see clearly in the dark as if it were evening, and their sense of smell allows them to detect different scents up to ten miles out. Depending on their subspecies, a dragonthorn may be able to detect their element within a 120 feet radius.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

While dragonthorns are advanced scientifically and technologically, they are backwards on their expectations with gender. They believe that there are only three sexes -- female, male, and intersex. Being transgender is considered taboo, though it is known, it is rarely brought up.   There is a potion of alteration a trans person can take, which would rewrite their DNA into the sex they identify with. The potion does contain side effects, like it can cause psychological damage from induced alterations while conscious. As the body has genitalia, it takes two does of the potion to complete the transition, increasing the harmful effects of potential psychological damage, and it takes at least a week to recover from the physical labor. A simpler method would be undergo surgery, and because it would take much longer to recover, most places won't do it.   Male dragonthorns are expected to carry the hard labor and join the military, whereas the females are seen as mothers and homeworkers. Those who are intersex find themselves able to complete any job as long as they take hormone therapy for whichever gender they wish to work as.

Courtship Ideals

Mates are the most important part of dragonthorn culture. However, a male dragonthorn may pursue a romantic relationship before he meets his mate. The male must begin the courtship, as a female is said to be delicate and to hold grace. If a male is interested in pursuing a romantic relationship, he must first gain the approval of the woman's family or guardian and offer an heirloom trinket of equal value as collateral. From there, they will go on courtings accompanied by the parents or the guardian. After a year of courting, the male may ask the parents or guardian's permission to wed the woman.   An arranged marriage can be produced as long as the immediate family has it legally documented and registered within the first 1,000 years of the child's birth. If no such record has been made, the woman is eligible to be courted by a male who gains approval and delivers the trinket.

Average Technological Level

They are the most advanced in all of Iolen. The other species take inspiration from them, yet can never reach the dragonthorns' level of expertise.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Runi are considered the most loyal and beneficial to all dragonthorns. So much so, that the royal family has the heir marry a noble runi to prove their allyship, regardless if the dragonthorn is mated to the runi.   Shifters are seen as allies under the guise of magick. However, they are still watches as the shifters are allies with werewolves as well.   Werewolves are seen as the biggest problem since they have been hostile toward dragonthorns for centuries. And all other sentient races are below the dragonthorns, with werewolves at the bottom.

Subspecies

Even though dragonthorns have magickal elements tied to them, they can only access one type. And while there is a chance that a dragonnestling can show signs of multiple elements, by the time they become dragonlings, their powers will settle down into a single type.
Flame
Flame dragonthorns have access to fire magick, and make up 35% of all dragonthorns. Many members of the royal family have been flame dragonthorns.
Hellfire
To date, only one hellfire dragonthorn has existed, and he is the heir to the Stadia Kingdom throne. They black flames that cannot be extinguished unless by the creator.
Light
Light dragonthorns are beings who can use sun magick. They are excellent healers, and make up 7% of the dragonthorn population.
Nature
Nature dragonthorns have connections to nature, such as trees, fungi, and all sorts of flora. They make up 20% of dragonthorns.
Shadow
Shadow dragonthorns are the second rarest type, with only 2% having known to exist in the population. They have access to dark magick.
Stone
Stone dragonthorns are those in great harmony with their earth. They control stone, earth, and magma. As a result, they make up 16% of the population.
Thunder
Thunder dragonthorns make up 15% of the population, and control lightning, as well as use it for speed and travel.
Tidal
Tidal dragonthorns are the third rarest, with only 5% making up the population. They have access over all types of water, including ice.

Royal Family

King Zadicus Angelus is known as a thunder dragonthorn.   Astaroth Angelus is the only hellfire dragonthorn in existence.   Davon Angelus is said to be a young dragonthorn just starting to come into his powers. So far, he has shown signs of having flame and thunder, but it is unknown which power will remain as he gets older.
