Ice Sheets

Overview

The Ice Sheets span a large amount of land between our borders and that of the Independent Kingdoms. Originally they were a larger series of lakes, which occasionally froze over, enabling easier travel between the realms. During the Long War, the Snow Witches used their magic to permanently freeze the lakes over, to us it seemed an advantageous decision, allowing our armies too to cross the boundaries.
This was a mistake, as soon after the lakes froze over, their mages started the second phase of their plan, conjuring a ginormous never ending snow storm. Two of the companies caught in the storm froze to death within a day, not managing to find their way out, while a third company was severely decimated.
 

Magical Properties

The spells used are unknown to us, what is known however, is that a constant supply of magical energy is needed to keep the spell working. Despite the end of the war, the Independents Kingdoms choose to keep it suppplied constantly, putting a considerable strain on their ressources.
Reports indicate that only their most powerful mages are sent to keep the spell intact, usually accompanied by novices. Interrogation of captured novices has brought no new information to light, apparently they are to be inducted at the location, instead of receiving any preparation.
