Throughout the Multiverse, there exists an unofficial hierarchy among beings. Within this hierarchy exists a mystical imbalance in power, a relationship similar to that of an apex predator and its lowly prey. The fear and devotion lesser beings have for these powerful creatures only perpetuates this imbalance, sustaining the powerful in the same way that a god is sustained by prayers. But unlike gods, these powerful beings tend to use this imbalance for their own purposes, typically providing knowledge or protection to those at the bottom of the food chain in exchange for their servitude. Mortals often forge pacts with these so-called “patrons” under desperate circumstances, but the arrangements rarely end once the time of crisis has passed.
[GM Note: The paragraph above basically means that you can choose one of the creatures listed below as a god or patron if you play a Cleric or Witch respectively. However, the information provided for each entry is barebones, especially for Clerics, so the exact details (i.e. the Divine Font, the Favored Weapon, etc.) are up for your GM to determine with you during character creation. And if you see a domain that fits your vision of a patron better than the ones provided (such as the Moon Domain for Clavius, the Cities Domain for Dispater, the Wealth Domain for Mammon, or the Water Domain for Riparioth, to name a few), ask your GM about it.]
