The Unseelie Court

The Unseelie Court is a cohort of dark fey whose power stems from the negative emotions felt by all living things in existence. Feelings like bitterness and self-loathing are poisonous to the soul, and for beings as erratic and oddly obsessive as fey, the emotional trauma this inflicts will often compound upon itself physically. Many Unseelie fey internalize these changes, which can warp their core identities forever.

Patron Domains: Cold, Darkness, Nightmares, Sorrow

Mab

Queen of Ice and Snow

The Queen of Ice and Snow reigns supreme over the Unseelie Court as a cruel and unforgiving ruler, whose malevolence is matched only by her beauty. She is the envious twin sister of the Summer Queen, whom she resents with every fiber of her being, and whose compassion she can never hope to emulate. Though she bears a striking resemblance to her sister, her hair falls in white tendrils like icicles, her skin is as cold and pale as the snow beneath her feet, and her icy blue eyes are windows to a heart as hard as diamond. Her sylvan realm is the Unseelie, a frigid forest of barren trees, where winter lasts forever. Mab lures travelers into her realm under the guise of a kind monarch, only to torture and freeze them into decorations for her palace. In her domain, there is no compassion, no mercy, and certainly no warmth; there is only the unrelenting cold of a queen who delights in the misery of others.

Clavius

Lord of Eternal Dusk

The Lord of Eternal Dusk, Clavius, serves as the youngest member of the Unseelie Court. He appears as a gaunt elf with white skin and hair as black as shadow, whose ageless countenance becomes slightly translucent beneath the moonlight of his realm. His kingdom is the Castle of the Crescent, a joyless place that rests in the furthest reaches of the Otherworld, beyond all other sylvan realms. From his obsidian throne, he sulks and bemoans his nature, for he would quickly fade away into nothingness if he were ever to leave the confines of his realm. Clavius exists in a perpetual state of pensive despair, as if his entire immortal life were one long, sorrowful sigh. His subjects and attendants speak of him in hushed tones, for they fear his mournful gaze and icy touch. Yet, for all his power and regal bearing, Clavius remains a prisoner within his own kingdom, forever bound to the Castle of the Crescent and the endless gloom that pervades it.

Boreas

The North Wind

The North Wind is a spiteful being of formidable strength and speed, who holds sway over the relentless squalls of the winter season. Once, he shared his throne with three other siblings, each sovereign over a different cardinal wind. But the ambitious North Wind decided to betray his siblings by swallowing them whole, bolstering his power, but leaving him as the sole ruler of the four winds. Despite his proclivity to double-cross, Boreas is a longstanding member of the Unseelie Court, but only because the Seelie fey despise him, and his narcissism would never allow him to be “uncourted.” His sylvan realm is the lonesome peak of Frostmaw Mountain, where blizzards and biting winds reign supreme, and only the strongest can hope to survive. Boreas is a cruel bully with an icy heart, who delights in the shivers and shudders of those who dare to approach his domain. But beneath his frosty exterior, there lies a glimmer of reason, as his demands aren’t as entirely unreasonable as they seem…

“Jack”

The Pumpkin King

The Pumpkin King, who was once King of Stories, reigned over the illustrious Library of Historia, alongside his beloved Queen of Song. The two were eager to share their wondrous kingdom with the rest of the Otherworld, welcoming fey from every Court to peruse their vast collection of music and literature. But alas, when his Queen met her untimely end, the bereaved King was consumed with grief, sending him into a downward spiral of madness and overwhelming despair. In this fragile state, he gradually began to forget his purpose, the nature of his realm, and even his own name. As the King’s mind deteriorated, so too did Historia, which was twisted and mangled into the nightmarish dreamscape of Hysteria. The King himself was reborn as a monstrous scarecrow, his head replaced with a leering jack-o'-lantern that flickers like baleful fire. Now, he stalks his once-beautiful kingdom as a mere husk of his former self, forever grieving his lost love and forever doomed to haunt the dreams of mortals.
