The Exalted Ones

The Exalted Ones are the angelic caretakers of the seven tiers of Heaven. They are the most powerful of all celestials, and despite being creatures of law and order, rather than of pure beneficence, they are not archons. Although they each possess wings and are undoubtedly pure of heart, every one of them takes on a unique feminine form (excluding the three males in the Triumvirate), with a different coloration to their feathers.

Cassiel

The Messenger

Cassiel is the youngest member of the Exalted Ones; however, it would be foolish to equate his age with inexperience. He was sculpted out of sand from the shores of Heaven by Uriel herself, who endowed him not only with the gift of speed, but also with the burden of beauty, for Cassiel was created in the spitting image of Asmodiel: the fallen angel that now rules Hell. With the exception of his blonde hair and lily-white wings, which resemble those of a dove, the two are nearly identical in appearance. Inspiring the virtue of humility, Cassiel is one of the three guardian angels (collectively known as “The Triumvirate”) who preside over the Threshold, the Bottom Tier of Heaven. As the chosen ambassador of the Exalted Ones, Cassiel has no true domain to call his own; instead, he delivers messages throughout the Nine Realms and holds forum with its various ruling powers.

Barachiel is

Tiberiel is an extremely qualified celestial warrior who not only witnessed the rebellion of the Fallen Ones firsthand, but also took up arms in Heaven’s defense during the period of uncertainty following the Syzygy. For a long time, he was but one of the many archons to watch over the Celestial Plane; however, he was later elevated to the rank of archangel for his unfaltering dedication and service. Now, wielding a lance forged from his own willpower, he glides through the open skies of paradise upon tattered vulturelike wings, scanning the realm below for danger. Inspiring the virtue of honor, Tiberiel is one of the three guardian angels (collectively known as “The Triumvirate”) who preside over the Threshold, the Bottom Tier of Heaven. As the stalwart defender of Heaven’s outer ramparts, Tiberiel guards the walls around the mountain’s base to stand against any potential invasion, whether demonic or infernal in nature.

Orphiel is . imposing wings of a falcon . Inspiring the virtue of generosity, Orphiel is the guardian of Proelera, the Second Tier of Heaven, a glittering beach of white sand that serves as the mustering ground where every soldier in the heavenly host is trained in the ways of war.

Jophiel is . wings of a blue jay . Inspiring the virtue of patience, Jophiel is the guardian of Aeterna, the Third Tier of Heaven, a marble monastery the size of a small kingdom where enlightened souls may spend their afterlives in contemplative meditation.

Inspiring the virtue of kindness, Galethiel is the guardian of Requius, the Fourth Tier of Heaven, a snow-covered peak where the souls of pacifists that refuse to join the ranks of the heavenly host may add their cries to the great chorus of Heaven.

Phaedriel is . elegant wings of a swan . Inspiring the virtue of purity, Phaedriel is the guardian of Illumis, the Fifth Tier of Heaven, a chain of floating islands where philosophers and sages who held no creed or faith in life can continue to teach in sublime conservatories.

Erathiel

The Avenger

Erathiel is . wings of a spotted eagle . Inspiring the virtue of courage, Erathiel is the guardian of Iudica, the Sixth Tier of Heaven, a winding street lined with castles and celestial bureaus where judges and scribes relentlessly toil to maintain peace in the Multiverse.

Uriel

The Defender

Uriel is the wisest and fairest of all celestials. Donned in platinum armor from head to toe, with the lambent wings of a phoenix, she is the last of the Elohim: the council of celestials that originally governed the Multiverse before one of its founding members, Asmodiel (who would later take the name Asmodeus), staged his fateful rebellion against Heaven. Uriel may appear dainty at first glance, but she is by far the mightiest of Heaven’s inhabitants, and her enmity is not easily shaken. For she was the Exalted One who smote the Fallen Ones for their heresy, stripping them of their wings personally. Inspiring the virtue of diligence, Uriel stands as a silent sentinel at the gates of Eden, the Highest Tier of Heaven, a walled garden where all angels and archons are given their purpose by a mysterious presence known only as the Voice.
