<The creation of all>
Timeline for the History of the Winter Realm of Faerie from Creation to Present Modern Times.
<The creation of all>
With the creation of the Realms, some of the left over chaos magic sinks into the underpinnings of Winter. It naturally eases towards a neutral morality frame to begin with, but is soon coloured by the wild, unsettling dreams of Winter's citizens. The first hints of unbalancing emotional, magical and psychic fault lines will eventually cause Voidborn in a specific Wintery type, and which are still not quite understood.
The Starlight Queen, and the Enduring King created the first spark together of the Dreaming powers well known in Winter. These were at first entirely Wild magic healing, very unlike the warmer, softer type known to be strong parts of Spring Realm. Entirely the kind of mending for walking wounded that might take place on a duelling or besides a killing field, when so much of Faerie was very young and volatile. The very bones of Winter, are filled with this manner of wonderful, icy power.
The creation of the Dreaming Wild Magic of Winter allowed for the Wild Magic Leylines to be planned and brought into being with the combination of musical magic, dreaming, and creation magic tethered together by way of arcane spiralling. Similar magic was used to bring particularly the Enduring King, Helliphae, into being, though on a less vibrant, independently living scale. The Wild Magic leylines are particularly harder to harness without some manner of luck or conduit, while the Arcane leylines are smaller and easier to manage more delicate magic, such as the difference between a blizzard and a small snowstorm.
Atlantis is founded as the first city of Winter, and grows large quite rapidly. It becomes very well known for its magical presence, elegance, and absolutely beautiful buildings. While initially ruled by a council of matriarchs, eventually Atlantis has its own Grand Archmaester, and then Prince as it spreads to the size of a province on its own.
Not long after various creation matters and the creation of the four treasures of the four Monarchs and first change of the seasons, the Enduring King, Helliphae as he is called, chose his Queen Consort for political power, and his Prince Consort, Inurae, for love. However, both are from different families of slowly strengthening Winter Faerie groupings, so it is still in some manner a political choice. Though it takes time given their Daoine, Siren, and Daimon status, eventually Lady Aemillia, is able to conceive children by both Faeries with assistance from Spring fertility rites. This offers further stability to the very start of the realm. Their children and grandchildren are some of the oldest born Faeries, rather than those simply created, though this early on, many Faerie are still created with the magic of all four Monarchs as far as it is known.
Shimmer City is eventually founded out of the various city growth and collection of different smaller villages. There are several origins for its name, among them being the glowing wisp lights and candles used to brighten the deepest of the night sky. It was not a grand place like Atlantis was with even its founding. Initially, Shimmer gained its start as a collection of manor homes and beautifully maintained snowy winter gardens and elegant tea houses, but eventually became the largest city in all of Winter, next to Atlantis. While true that Atlantis was the first true city of Winter, and slightly older, Shimmer became more well known for the number of nobles and political activity, while Atlantis was much more important for its location, trade, and especially magic learning.
King Helliphae, having contended with the very beginnings of Winter's existence with the other Monarchs takes time to choose his first Royal Court from the first noble families establishing themselves. Particularly, this begins with his Queen and Prince Consorts, and their families, regardless of whether they are born or wished into existence. The positions of Seneschal, Prime Matriarch, Wild Dreams Confessor, First and Second Adviser, and several others are immediately created. At this time in the history of the Fae in Winter, war is not yet a focus, but land is divided into provinces and districts, with a soft preference towards those smaller rulers being female or feminine.
King Helliphae primarily built the Midnight Palace out of ice with his powers, with aid from his first chosen Court, Queen Consort and Prince Consort. It was formed from magically carved frozen stone for its foundations and lower levels, and is fully insulated against the cold. The upper levels of the palace are entirely formed from black and silvery magically charged ice, which can be activated with spells to protect the Winter Monarch, their family, and inner circle of trusted nobles. It is meant to signify the endurance of winter, as well as its harsh but elegant beauty, protection, graceful strength, but most importantly the hopeful presence of dreaming.
Lady Azaur, daughter of one of King Helliphae's grandchildren and a noble Magister of Atlantis, is born into a partly Siren, partly Unicorn family. Over her youth, her cleverness and skill in Wild Dreaming magic are readily apparent, even considering the vast skill of Sirens in their music and Unicorns with creation magic. She is one of six sisters, two brothers, and one sibling without a specified gender presentation. While she is neither youngest nor eldest, Azaur's command of magical aptitude exceeds all of her siblings. Her upbringing in Atlantis is wealthy and pleasant, even considering the complete lack of poverty and most social struggles.
In the Winter Realm, true mass scale violence had not yet occurred in its early formation, even considering the political ambitions of various families and factions. Most preferred to settle differences with magical displays highlighting the beauty of Winter and its harshness. However, the occasional minor duel, skirmish or disagreement among the Winter Faeries eventually called for some manner of attending to violence when individuals could not settle differences. The Matriarchs came together to create Wandering Tundra Arcanic Rangers working with Pathfinder Rogues skilled in the specific needs for the constant Wintery terrain. The earliest of these were typically second and third daughters of families with the focus especially upon traversing tall ice mountains and vast snowy spaces, but their numbers eventually broadened to include men, and a-gendered Fae also wanting to serve. Each district had its own independent squad whom answered to their Ranger-Captain, or otherwise the local ruler rather than a large ranging realm wide force.
After approximately two hundred thousand years, King Helliphae's Court Advisers note how well the the regional development of the Tundra Rangers and Pathfinders function. However, the infighting and ambitions of the various regional Ranger Captains and Lords start to cause more issues than the organisation is worth. As such, rather than disbanding them, his Queen Consort, Lady Aemillia and then Dreams Confessor, Lady Azaur, suggest offering Royal patronage to the entire grouping of units to make them a Realm wide organisation. It is not an army such as is common in the Summer Realm, but it does add to some sense of legal order. A new position on the council is created as the Lord Ranger of the Winter Realm as Court Adviser during this restructuring, and the seat is gained by a display of endurance and prowess, rather than political bickering. This takes about ten thousand years to complete, and gives at least one traditional Adviser position related to physical ability and knowledge, rather than noble prestige.
Zenefar, a Siren from a common lineage, completes the Proving after Helliphae decides to retire. He becomes the second King of the Winter Realm. He was known for expanding the Royal Ranger Commission, giving each region of Winter a Captain, and dividing Winter into Four Provinces, and 16 districts outside of the Capital City Shimmer, and its Proto-Mageocracy Sister City - Atlantis.
Felilae was a Vampiric Daimon and born of Spring and Winter parents, respectively. From Atlantis, he completes the Proving and is accepted by the Stone of Destiny to become the third Monarch of Winter. While Feliae has a masculine expressed gender, their body is occasionally in a female shape. further added to the stability of the Province-District System. Expanded the Midnight Court Palace, and modernised its interior.
A shifter from a small village outside of Shimmer City has big dreams and proves it when he sails through the Proving. He becomes the fourth Winter King. While beginning his rule hopefully, It is primarily his envy of Summer that eventually comes to control Rilek. However, he does expanding the Royal Ranger Commission once more. Though, this is the first time that the Winter nobles and royals look to Summer Realms Armed Forces in twisted envy, causing the first true ripples of chaos magic in the form of Voidborn in isolated, darker places in Winter.
Zenefar is King for half a million years, and fades from a broken heart due to the accidental death of his Prince Consort while extreme mountain climbing. He is survived by four children, and one grandchild.
The Stone of Destiny stops responding to King Rilek as his greed increases, and abruptly chooses another to be King for Winter's Frozen Throne. This time, it is a Daoine-Unicorn named Maris that the stone reacts to outside of the traditional Proving, though Maris does choose to undergo the rite regardless. Maris' rule begins with grand promise, especially as a Paternal Great-grandson of the first Winter King, Helliphae. He's known for going against tradition and siding with the nobles of Shimmer by his choice of adding hereditary nobility to the Royal Council in half the twenty Advisory Seats.
Felilae ruled Winter Realm for one million years before retiring, and died approximately a million years afterwards in a duelling tournament gone very wrong, accidentally.
Celistar, a Nature Fae/Siren succeeds in the Proving after Maris' long reign compared to some of the previous Winter Kings. The political standoff that has been occurring for untold generations now, sees a sudden heel/face turn. Atlantis now has a champion for the first time in many millennia, as it is where the new King's maternal line hails from. Initially seeking balance in what has been called the Ice Shard Conflict - a political standoff pitting Atlantis' political structure against Shimmer City, Celistar increases the number of political Advisory seats in the elder cities favour, and especially honours the appointment of Magisters and Magistrixes. Rather than balance as it seems, this causes more strife, but it is not for another four hundred thousand years that this is evident.
Gallian, a Winter Nymph from one of several preserves, takes up the point of view of what will eventually become the Nationalists' cause. He advances and preserves wildlife habitats in Winter Realm with assistance from Spring and Autumn Advisory. This action brings Winter back into balance with the rest of Faerie to some degree and eases the faint unpleasant whispers of Chaos magic darkening. He holds the Kingship of Winter, or Glacial Stewardship as he calls it, preferring to title himself a Prince rather than a King in deference to the first Moon and Dawn Queens. He is as well known for having no less than ten Queen Consorts which he manages to treat equally, but individually. Gallian's offspring today number in the millions of Winter Nymphs, and he really quite got around, as they say! It's considered an amusing exaggeration with some truth that Gallian may have managed to populate the beginnings of what will become the Frost Army all by his own seed.
King Gallian undertakes a vast alteration and update of the Midnight Palace, and Ebonstar Court Complex of Buildings, expanding them into their own separately administered district in Shimmer City. The Shimmer City Guard is as well split off and a Royal Midnight Guard is as well created during this same several thousand year period, often known as that time Shimmer City tried to again one up Atlantis. Helliphae's statue is vandalised and also rebuilt in an even grander style to make a point, and the chaos beneath Winter Realm shifts again.
Maris, one of the longer Kings of Winter, fades away from despair related issues and an inability to save his mind from shattering like melting ice.
Jaelyric, grandson of King Maris, succeeds at the Proving to become Winter's King, but similarly prefers the styling of Prince, and His Radiant Grace. He is one of Lady Azaur's known lovers, and while doesn't choose to have any offspring, Jael is known for his kind decisions to carving more houses and apartments in current city districts of Shimmer out of pure Ice to make space for more Faeries. He is also considered the source of the origin story of Jack Frost, much later made popular by human dreaming. In a major political alteration and attempt to return to Winter's Dreaming roots, Jaelyric shifts all of the Royal Advisors back to appointments only, and eases deepened further imbalance, even as he alienates and infuriates the most of the nobles of Shimmer.
Celistar fades, but not after further contributing to the hydroponic underground system of gardening as a private citizen.
This particular King is well known among historians with an interest in Atlantis with his expansion of the grand Mage-city. Verali's reign is known typically as the classical Golden Age of the City regarding art, music, and the expansion of the unique mageocracy culture that sets it very much apart from the rest of Winter in a truly beautiful fashion. Many of Verali's improvements to the foundations of buildings in Atlantis eventually would be extremely important.
Once King Verali fades after a few million years of holding the Monarchy of Winter, it is Zaelric who succeeds in the Proving and becomes King. Zaelric is the first to truly propose a Frost Army to at least partly replace the Ancient Ranger System, and does so about halfway through his reign, even over the protests of half his Council and especially those from Atlantis who preferred to see more art, music and Dream magic as an investment. He is as well known for being spectacularly killed by the first known large version of Voidborn seen in Winter. An excellent King, though he was Monarch several millennia, Verali was deeply mourned for his clever wit, and sharp intellect. He was the last entirely moderate King who attempted to make peace between the two factions of nobles in Winter.
Azaur announced her arcane aligned ability of Dream Weaving, and travelled around to all the realms to heal the minds of anyone afflicted for nearly 3 million years. Many followed her, becoming her students, learning how to Dream Weave themselves, as a more easily learned approach to mind healing than the wild magic of the past.
Following King Zaelric's unfortunate demise, after many millennia, it is Ilmarëlaimë whom finally completes the Proving after trying for most of his life to do so. First with ambition, then it is with earnest compromise that he desires to be King of Winter. Unfortunately, his preferences for the older Matriarchal traditional ways immediately make him a target. On his coronation day, he is marked for Death by a trio of assassins that near succeed in killing him permanently. However, he manages to persist in making hydroponic farming and gardening popular. The stunning creation of the Hanging Gardens under Atlantis and Shimmer are opened to the public as twin symbols of Winter's beauty. Nearly four more occasions, Ilmarë is nearly murdered on four separate occasions due to his attempt to forestall the creation of an Army of Winter. He becomes known for having one eye open in his sleep, and killed at least one of his would be murderers while bathing. Despite this unpleasant excitement, he manages to rule several million years.
Lady Azaur creates the Dreaming Temple, and with Royal Patronage, names herself Matriarch. In this space, the Dreaming Pools are opened and tended for the first time with Royal assistance. The number of Faerie healed by the space mentally and spiritual are beyond telling, and Lady Azaur's reputation as its head continues to flourish. Eventually, her students begin to refer to her as Priestess, eclipsing her previous position as Dreams Confessor on the Royal Council.
Despite Lady Azuar's protests, General Ananun helped establish the Nightmares with the help of some of the Priests and Priestesses of the Temple of Azaur. Effectively splitting the factions among the Priesthood, and draining the Dreaming Temple of much of its growth. He also set up a training facility on Shadow Mountain, and was named the First Commander of the Nightmares.
Ilmarëlaimë's Queen Consort, Velara, and twin children are eventually casualties as his enemies are unable to get to the Unicorn Siren directly. The King does not rule much beyond this point, other than to ensure a Proving successor. On a brighter note, despite the loss of his family, Ilmarëlaimë further expanded the Midnight Court Palace structures underground with the same mirror lighting used in his hydroponic farming and gardening to keep Voidborn away.
Priest Ratundam relocated the caves in more recent Winter Realm history. They hold magical pools that help amplify a Dream Weavers abilities. While once commonly used by the first denizens of Winter with wild Dream magic healing, and the caves had no particular name in the past, so eventually became connected with Ratundam.
After the previous King stepped down to spend more time with his family, Hiemel, supported greatly by the Progressives, goes through the proving and becomes King. It's not shortly after that tension between the Progressives and the Naturalists begins.
While not an actual war, the progressives and the nationalists were nearly at war several times because King Hiemal supported the continued mining underneath Atlantis which had begun millennia before his rule. King Hiemal had to negotiate the naturalists from attacking, or the progressives from defending, on several occations.
The war that began with Atlantis sinking, the blasted lands being created, and the Voidborn being let through into Winter.
The Barrier has held the Voidborn mostly at bay, outside of a few insurgent attacks here and there.
Tallis goes through the Proving and becomes King following the Great Sacrifice of the Four Monarchs of Faerie. He rules with largely a solemn grace and elegance, as the then-recent conflicts and the the holding steady of the Barrier give King Tallis much to rebuild in Winter.
After Tallis steps down as King of Winter, Ayden hears the stone calling to him in the healing pools of Ratundam, and goes through the Proving. He becomes King.
