The Sundered Sisters
Once joined, long parted, now forever one.
Two peoples, long sundered, met in the midst of a ragged strip of land at the eastern edge of a tormented continent.
One had arrived there over sea from the south and populated the Azyrinth mountains.
One had arrived over land from the west and populated the Golden Hills and the north coast.
Somewhere in between, they encountered one another and discovered that their languages were closely akin. They could not understand one another, not exactly. But to each, the words of the other and the patterns in their speech felt familiar.
They both carried tales of escape from a dying land far to the west, and some of their gods had the same names. But others had changed, or been forgotten.
The southerners had dwelt in the Azyrinth mountains for years uncounted by this time--nearly two thousand years, by most estimates.
The northerners were latecomers, struggling bedraggled over the western mountains and roving south and east for new land.
Yet the northerners said to one another: We speak sister languages; we both come from the accursed place where the fire spirits devoured the rivers. Our ancestors were one people, and we should be again. Also we are stronger and greater in numbers, so we should rule the one people.
And they conquered the south and made its ancient cities their vassals, and called the whole thing the One Empire of Pento, Kingdom of Kingdoms.
