Gunung Mulia

"Upon the stones of Gunung Mulia is graven the condemnation of the world."
Manggala, King of Lahat

Gunung Mulia is the highest point on the island of Lampuato. Before the island descended into metaphysical and ecological collapse, the mountain sheltered a temple of prophecy. Generations of rulers from the Kingdom of Lampuato came there to ask questions of the future, and the answers were revealed in cryptic passages engraved upon the mountain's stones. Since the collapse, prophecies still appear upon the rocks - but now they are terrible visions of a world in total ruin, speaking often of the demise and destruction of all the reader loves.

The accuracy of these prophecies is highly questionable. In the days before the gods of Lampuato turned against their people, the prophecies were vague: while they always came true in some respect, they were never absolute in their inevitability. Since the change, however, the messages have taken on the nature of personal attacks more than genuine prognostications. Still, many contain a core of truth, and others seem designed to drive the reader toward the very future they foretell. For example, a prophecy that reads, "You will kill your own partner out of jealousy when they betray you," may only come true because the reader received it - and the spirits of the mountain seem to tailor such messages for those most likely to fulfill them.

But the most common messages are not directed at individuals, but at the world itself. In the words inscribed upon Gunung Mulia, the world dies a hundred different deaths - by flood, by fire, by massive earthquakes, and by invasions of demons. Each apocalypse is described in dreadful detail, and reading the texts fills the reader with a profound sense of inevitability and despair. The words serve as a conduit for the mountain's wrathful gods to strike at those who read them, convincing mortals that the world is beyond salvation - that life has no further purpose, only a purposeless dissolution that will come swiftly.

Notable Spirits

Like the other gods of Lampuato, the spirits of Gunung Mulia are no longer named, in the hope that they will one day fade entirely from memory. In the time before the collapse, they were known as masters of Kosalo - able to examine the structure and pattern of the universe and to decipher the futures it contained. Since the fall, however, they seem only to foretell the dissolution of Kosalo and the world's inevitable descent into Keterbagaan - the primordial chaos that will one day swallow all existence.

Geography

Gunung Mulia is located in the western highlands of Lampuato. It is a relatively easy mountain to climb, with gentle, grass-covered slopes. Deep caves burrow through its interior - mostly natural, though expanded and refined by the priests who once dwelled there. The prophetic messages are typically found engraved upon the walls of these caves, and they change without warning - never while one is watching, but if the viewer glances away, the inscriptions may not be the same when they look back.
