Courtney is the main character and primary narrator of the Flapper Covenant series, a Millennial university student who discovers that she was born into Exile in the wrong universe. That universe - always hostile to her - soon turns deadly, and Courtney is forced to fight for her survival and make life-altering decisions at a moment's notice.
At the beginning of Book 2, Courtney is a caliber 8/type A holy aspect with advanced combat abilities. She displays a selfless streak toward her friends, and in moments of crisis she displays a tendency toward reckless self-sacrifice. This is a cause of growing concern for her loved ones.
That being said, Courtney reacts to danger with fierce bravery and determination, displaying a coolness under fire that Great War veterans like Hazel openly admire. This, combined with the ironic wit that her friends have come to love - wit that emerges all the more when things are tense - make Courtney someone that her friends find invaluable in dangerous situations.
Her friends - and the students of Braddock College - are coming to see Courtney as a beacon of hope in moments of danger. Her enemies are coming to fear her as a harbinger of dread. Opponents have underestimated her in the past, a mistake they lived to regret - if they lived at all.
Life
Courtney will be the first to tell you that her story is confusing, though she bravely tries to downplay how sad and tragic her life has been. However, that bravery has enabled Courtney to defy impossible odds and survive almost certain death in her quest to come home.
Courtney was displaced, born into exile in Verse: Servant Languish on August 11, 1984. Her false parents were Kenny, a truck driver, and Nadine, an aspiring country musician and former Marine Corps reservist.
Lonely and terrifying as her everyday life at home was, Courtney dreaded Kenny's inevitable return from the road far more. Nadine would mention his return days in advance, trying to build tension and fear. "Wait'll your dad gets home," she would say, then update Courtney on his location and how long it would be before he came back. Kenny's return was always the same - a row of chipped, crooked top teeth, too big for his mouth, would swallow his bottom lip. His eyes would blaze with fury and he would descend on Courtney - 6'6" of lean sinew and brute strength - beating her furiously with a swiftly removed belt or huge, ringed hands. "YOU LIKE THAT!? HUH!!? HUH!!!" His blaring voice could easily be heard by neighbors, as well as Courtney's terrified, anguished screams. After he had finished, leaving Courtney brutalized and traumatized, he would sit down in his chair in the corner and command her to stop crying and come to him. Unable to breathe through her tears, and deeply traumatized, she would refuse. Kenny would raise his voice and tell her to stop crying and come give him a hug or he would beat her again. "Stop yer cryin' and kimeer or I'll give you some more. You want some more?!" Before the age of five, Courtney had learned to keep her head in moments of extreme terror, navigating tense situations with a quick mind. She was also forced to lie to survive - Kenny would force her to tell him she loved him and that she forgave him. From this experience, Courtney learned that telling the truth to a deeply narcissistic person risked furious violence. Instead, she learned to hide her feelings and sharpen her intuition to a keen edge, in order to detect even the slightest change of emotion in a room. Deep within, she nursed a growing library of truths - that she'd learned what hatred meant, that she hated this terrifying brute, that she would never be safe.
Deeper still, a smoldering ember of doubt - were these really her parents?
