Autumn Grove

Autumn Grove is a small college town nestled in the Appalachian foothills, an hour's drive (in 2004) from the Ohio River and the state border with West Virginia. The town is the county seat for Braddock County and home to Braddock College. To most people, the town and college are interchangeable; the former was established to support the latter, and one could not exist without the other. The modern town perches on bluffs overlooking the Traeburn River and the Autumn Grove Mental Hospital.

Demographics

80% of Autumn Grove's inhabitants are affiliated with Braddock College - students, faculty, or staff. The population of Autumn Grove shrinks significantly in the quiet summer months, then triples again in September.

Districts

Autumn Grove is synonymous with Braddock College, whose campus dominates the center of town.

History

Autumn Grove was officially founded in 1763 to support the newly-chartered Braddock College. For several years the town of Autumn Grove was little more than the new college itself, along with a few ramshackle cabins and a tavern.

Points of interest

Braddock College is Autumn Grove's main point of interest; the town was founded to support the college.

Architecture

Autumn Grove is mostly Midwestern. Most of its buildings are 19th century Gothic revival or Edwardian, with a few more quaint buildings of the town and college being built in the 18th century Georgian style. All the streets on campus and uptown are paved with local bricks, and homes and academic buildings are commonly built with bricks as well.

Geography

Autumn Grove is situated in the Appalachian foothills. Brick streets wind their way up hilly inclines, and turn into hard dirt paths as they leave the uptown area. Outside of town, most roads are dirt, making travel awkward and occasionally treacherous the further one goes from town limits.

Natural Resources

The Traeburn Valley is thickly forested, and the hills are sometimes pocked with mineral deposits. Timber was among the area's first industries, as evidenced by the ruins of 18th century lumber mills around the Blackstead Forest.

Autumn Grove's largest exports are lumber and bricks. The town is home to one of the largest brickworks in the state, employing several hundred. Bricks stamped with "AUTUMN GROVE" are shipped across the United States and are a source of local pride.
