Fey

Up to date: Summer 2025

The Fey are magical beings created by Fate – the magic that permeates Otherworld and from there spreads to Our World.

They are each the spirit or embodiment of an Aspect of Nature: A species of fauna or flora, a natural phenomenon, a type of terrain or a specific manifestation of either (the Ganges River for example).
Their original purpose is to safeguard or be the voice of said Aspect. This means that should a new mountain spring occur or species evolve, new Fey would simply appear to represent them, and as rivers dry out and plants die, so too does associated Fey (until The Unravelling at least).
While fey are usually connected by a humanoid, human-adjacent shape, their Aspect commonly influences their body as much as their mind. Many have at least partial signs of their Aspect, like inhuman colorations, slightly more animalistic features etc.

An unintentional mutation of the Fey physiology is their Passion – a compulsive pull towards an emotion or a mood. The lure and fascination of the early Fey has evolved into an addiction and bond as strong as that to their Aspect, in some cases even surpassing it, making it their sole purpose.
This Passion has marked the Fey in different directions. While it to some is a need to receive, to others it is a need to impose. In some cases even changing the physiology of the Fey for this purpose.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Fey are humanoid beings. While many are of human adjacent size, some can be very small.
Formed by their Aspect of Nature, most Fey show traits of that Aspect, though the degree is very varied, based on family genealogy as well as luck.

While this is a full spectrum, here are some set examples:
Minimal: This Fey is by all means just a pointy eared Human.
Coloration: The Fey's Aspect expresses itself through the color of their skin, eyes and/or hair.
Physical Traits: Many Fey have some inhuman trait/traits of their Aspect. This could be a tail, sharp teeth, fur, barky skin, stone-like skin.
Monstrous: Some Fey have visually very little in common with Humanity. This includes secluded creatures like the Big Foot and Mermaids.
Werebeast: This Fey's Aspect expresses itself in the ability for them to shift between a basic Fey form and that of their aspect. While usually associated with beasts, some Fey can turn into trees etc.

Genetics and Reproduction

Fey mate and reproduce like all other creatures. Their gestation period is usually shorter than that of a human.
As they give birth, the mother instinctively knows how to form a glamour around their child to hide their Fey ancestry, making them Changelings to plant with human parents.
Many Fey are brood parasites, planting their children in unassuming human families, too driven by their Passion to care for a child.

Growth Rate & Stages

A pure Fey would usually age a bit faster than a human, while a Changeling follows human aging. They remain Changelings until well into their teens, when usually the Fey parents will come by and pick them up, dispelling their heritage suppressing magic, or they hear the call of Otherworld, drawing them out in the middle of the night, never to return to their human family.
As the Changeling curse is dispelled, they leave behind their past lives to become full Fey.
That is how it used to be. Since the Unravelling, the affected Changelings with the broken curse have come to be seen as a sudden new stage of life, previously non-existent.
Some remain Changelings, while others undergo a ritual to dispel the remnants of their curse, but having lived in the limbo of the broken curse, makes them more aware and ‘human’ than the Fey before them, retaining wants and memories from their earlier stages.
Fey do not enter old age as humans do. Most retain their adult look for the rest of life, when they start to slow down, becoming more distant before simply fading, becoming once again one with Fate.

Ecology and Habitats

Traditionally, Fey never venture far from their Aspect, living their entire life in close proximity to their spirit bound tree or animal flock.
Those who are pulled by their Passion foremost, are more likely to wander. If the pull of their Passion is strong enough, they might live a life always on the fly, hunting and haunting the source of their Passion.
New Fey are more likely to try to live as humanly as possible, finding ways to get their “fix” as an occasional thing.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Fey are beings of flesh and blood, and need nourishment as such. They do however come with their own specialized gland, capable of turning endorphins into sustenance, and a brain capable of producing larger quantities of endorphins than that of a human brain.
Due to the very varied genealogy of Fey, there are many nuances to this from Fey to Fey:
Almost all Fey is attuned to a specific emotion or mood for their endorphin release. There is a full spectrum between those who can live exclusively feeding on this emotion, and those who are simply slightly joyed by its present, but need basic food and drink for their needs.
When it comes to food, most Fey have a pronounced sweet tooth.

Biological Cycle

Depending on the strength of their Aspect of Nature, a Fey can follow that Aspect very closely in mood and energy. A Fey very attuned to a spring plant may be very vibrant and energetic while it is in bloom, but dormant in winter.
A Fey very attuned to a beast may follow their mating patterns.
Some Nymphs, like the Hamadryads are born and die alongside their specific tree.

Behaviour

Fey live their lives driven by the pulls of their Aspect of Nature and their Passion. To some, one or both of these is simply a remnant of their genetic past, where exposure gives them a slight burst of satisfaction, but most are in some amount very dependent or needy of one of them.

While this too is a spectrum more than a ladder, here are some examples:
Minimal: The Fey gets a light sense of zen when being around their Aspect/Passion, but that is all.
Partial: These Fey feel connected enough to their Aspect/Passion that, while they may live a normal life, they occasionally need to return to it.
Fixation: The Fey’s Aspect/Passion often occupies their mind. They live near it, and it affects a lot of their decisions.
All-consuming: The Fey is their Aspect. They live it. They feel it. They live and die with it.

A Passion driven Fey will either feed on feeling an emotion themselves, being in an aura of that emotion or inflicting it upon others, making the nature of their Passion is the source of the true danger of and to a Fey.
For example, a Fey addicted or required to feel or make others feel true dread is easily driven to insane actions to accomplish this – possibly to even rush to the next action immediately after to sustain their hunger.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

All Fey have pointy ears, much life the Alfs.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

All Fey are more attuned to the flow of Fate than other creatures. Especially those raised traditionally, while the New Fey still feel something, they are less capable of understanding it.
Depending on their physiology, many Fey have tweaks to their senses based on their Aspect of Nature.
