Republic of Pannilun

Pannilun originated from the partitioning of the Costtoralli League by the two Gens Tyrani who'd taken control of both it and Pannilun as the league crumbled. Relations between the two gens had begun positive, but over the years they worsened until the two decided to partition the nation rather than keep fighting for influence over it. This ushered in a period of strife between the two, especially as they competed for trade with one another. Pannilun would largely reap the early rewards of this treaty as it was closer to most of South Telgren and better able to leverage this location. Once it had outcompeted Pallanium, it would seem there was no way the former rival could recover, but this all changed in the early 1200s. Fraspika, Pannilun's main trade partner collapsed, and then a new state arose- the Blazennian Empire. Seizing the opportunity, Pallanium negotiated exclusive trade routes which were not extended to Pannilun for decades, necessitating expansion elsewhere, and Pannilun began investing in conquering inland. However, they were not blind to other opportunities. Colonies on Ifyrial would soon become a major source of profits, and Pannilun was no exception, establishing a number of slave plantations and shipping the crops grown there through their home port and into Telgren. Pannilun would leverage this strength to begin trading extensively through land routes, bypassing the dangerous straits and connecting directly to the Republic of Ultarra, who became a close partner. This resulted in the inland city of Maylia, located at the foot of the highlands, growing into the second city of the republic. Maylia was located in the valley of Cesire, a defensible breadbasket, and one that Pannilun focused on heavily during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Eastern cities have always had to bear the brunt of the Erleting attacks- there are fewer cities and more flatlands on the east side of the mountains, meaning more Erleting to deal with. However, the invasion of Dragan Ivar's Army changed this. Unfortunately this would not change soon enough for Maylia, which was seized and sacked in one of Ivar's first campaigns. After Ivar's armies collapsed, Pannilun's Tyranid decided to commit his troops to a joint effort with Pallanium to attack and seize Maylia back. However, their troops were beaten to the city by one of Ivar's former generals, Sarbarve. Although they attempted to push on, this proved foolish, as Sarbarve was a wily tactician and veteran of numerous battles against similar opponents. The armies of Pannilun were crushed, and upon returning to the city in disarray, whipped the townspeople into a frenzy and led a coup over the city, establishing a fledgeling republic for the first time since 1196.
