Republic of Ultarra

The Republic of Ultarra is a minor city-state that is, however, situated in a very advantageous position for trade with Ifyrial. This made Ultarra a major center for the slave trade as well as trade in minerals from Ifyrial, turning it into a commercial hub, much to the chagrin of the northern city-states of Alcedina. Ultarra suffered heavily during the Dennonian Wars, especially in conflict with Sarbarve's Kingdom, as many of the city's slave plantations were lost to the enemy. In addition, the loss of their colonies has caused a large hit to the profits of the city. However, with ties renewed with Novum Alcedina, things could return to the commercial success of the past.

History

The Republic of Ultarra, like the other southern Alcediner city-states, was founded after the collapse of West Oleandron, and has never been conquered since then. Although the city was situated rather close to the Kingdom of Sunþiruda's borders (the nation which conquered those of the north), it fell under the sway of the Costtorali League, an ancient republican council of the other southern cities. Though not a part of the League, Leaguer forces would defend the city, as the rulers paid tribute. Thanks to this, and like the other towns along the southwestern coastline, Ultarra was safe from expansion from the north.

Although the League and the Kingdom would both eventually fall, Ultarra remained much the same. The city was quite poor, and its land was constantly threatened by Erleting raids. It paid tribute to a succession of masters throughout the early 2nd millennium, a situation that would not change until the 1300s. It was only then that Ultarra was able to make use of the interior lands and the city began amassing some power, enabling it to enforce suzereignty over several small, nearby cities and finally shake the shackles of tribute. This was primarily accomplished thanks to the establishment of a Gens Tyrani within the city, as well as the city's conversion to Blazeology- though in both these things Ultarra was actually the last notable city to succumb. This is because unlike the northern cities the nation never had influence from the Giriþiudan peoples, and unlike the southeastern cities it did not have much trade with Blazennia.

Still, the city's militarization would prove most fruitful, and it expanded well into the interior, espeically into the mountains now occupied by the nation of Grakka. However, despite the mountains being the site of modest ore deposits, their presence on the frontier made them unsafe. Besides, labor was lacking- Ultarra has never possessed a particularly large population and thanks to the explusion of Erleting tribes, there was an acute labor shortage throughout much of the 16th and 17th centuries which led to Ultarran commoners getting generous wages and eventually rising to become powerful merchants in their own right. These merchants would become empowed again with the discovery of minerals on Ifyrial, which eventually led to the mass enslavement of the continent's orcs, even though Ultarra's colonies actually remained quite modest.

Ultarra would become a major hub for the trade in slaves, as it is the closest western port to Ifyrial with the proper infrastructure, both for managing slaves and for replenishing supplies if moving north. Still, even though many ships only used the city as a stopping point, more stayed, and the plantations outside the city's walls soon grew large, growing crops for export and for sale to ships, enabling more trade. This situation worked well all the way until the invasion of Dragan Ivar's Army. Ultarra, fat, rich, and with much of that wealth outside its walls, was an early target and suffered greatly- losing all its land outside the walls. This would then lead to fullscale riots within the city as order broke down and looting spread. Things were only prevented from getting worse by the imposition of order by the Guildsmen Militias, and a new regime was implemented in 1953, with the old Tyrani unceremoniously shipped off to Blazennia.

Ultarra would later become the staging point for an important part of the Little Dennonian War- the battle of Tridunai. Forces from the other city-states would land in the city and, reinforced by local troops, began a pincer attack to liberate the Pass of Tridunai from occupation by the forces of General Sarbarve. This attack reunified Ultarra with their land routes to the north and several smaller coastal towns that had fallen to the enemy, but failed to take back inland territories; this being left to the three nations of Ultarra, the Republic of Floren, and the Republic of Tridunai. However, these attacks were seriously disjointed and Ultarra's forces, in particular, were hamstrung by guerilla forces left by Sarbarve and prevented from relieving the efforts of the Eastern Cities before Sarbarve's troops could rout their armies. Now wary, Ultarra would retreat to defensible locations while the forces of Tridunai and Floren fell back to their cities, thus leaving defense as the only option and forcing Ultarra to give up on the rest of their former lands- for now. After all, leading a fullscale assault into Grakka would allow Sarbarve to seize the initiative and potentially cut off their troops in the mountain.
